New Physical Houses

by: ermmm

So this rush is already looking like it’s going to be massive, and PCs are going to be huge, which is exasperated by the fact that KKG leaving will increase quotas. The real question is… how long until houses (besides ChiO) have to remodel or move because they don’t have enough space? Fire codes won’t allow everyone in the house at the same time for chapter… I guess itll be held in lecture halls? Would UNC ever step in like NCSU did and make a Greek village?

as amazing as it would be for unc to have a greek village it is unattainable due to the real estate in chapel hill. Unfortunely this has been a huge problem to greek life at unc because all the houses have enough money to build bigger houses there is just not property for them so the only solution is to have more chapters which im pretty sure is in the works, but its a long process so well probably get one in the next two years or so

Existing houses can be torn down and larger ones can be built on same sites. You dig a large basement and also add more stories. Happens all the time. With that said, another sorority or two is also needed to keep membership numbers reasonable. NM classes are getting too large, it's hard to know everyone, tough on a sisterhood.

a lot of the homes are historic sites and have to be preserved- they can’t be torn down

But they haven't been preserved, they've been added to and modified over the years as needed. There is a way to add on and keep the same look. It's harder but it's possible. But when all the sidings are now vinyl and there aren't really original materials any longer they were hardly preserved.

This is stupid and wrong. Chapel Hill has zoning laws. Are you from Houston or something??

Yes and "zoning law" as you call it, incorrectly, does not mean that rebuilding plans are automatically outlawed. There is a review process and improvements and rebuilds get passed all the time. If you really want a better house, let the adults handle it. That's why you have a house corp.

My opinion and I haven’t fact checked this…Chapel Hill needs to focus on building new dorms before even thinking about expanding sorority housing. Most national sororities aren’t going to invest in bigger houses here because our chapter sizes are smaller and not as profitable as the large chapters at other schools. Plus, zoning in Chapel Hill is always a hurdle. It’s also worth noting that the last new dorm on campus was built back in something like 2006, and the next one isn’t expected until 2028. Meanwhile, the UNC system is clearly putting more money into other campuses to keep more students in-state and within the system—which means Chapel Hill keeps getting pushed down the list.

Chapel hill doesn’t own sorority houses though. The building of dorms and houses has no correlation. The chapters own their houses/can buy property on their own.
