expansion

by:

I don't think Panhel should be agreeing to new expansion chapters until all of the current chapters are at quota. Sure there's demand for PNM's that don't match because they let their ego affect their preferences and aim too high. With greek life under siege people need to focus on improving what we already have- not circling like sharks trying to tear orgs down. the administration should be trying to help orgs like Sig Ep and not trying to force them to sell to a new national sorority as a base for their expansion and then force a reboot of Sig Ep as a non-housed frat. No one wants that.

Agreed!! Recruitment numbers are dropping and many houses of ALL tiers are struggling to make quota without snap bids/cob. We didn’t need to add Alpha Phi (not saying they aren’t great, but the numbers didn’t call for it and I don’t think they added something especially unique to the culture, most sororitys don’t)

Help strengthen the groups who are already here!

I don't know where you heard that but nobody is trying to buy Sig Ep; besides, if anyone is looking for a house to buy, then they'd probably buy a house about to get the boot like Chi Phi or probation perennials like SAE. But even then, it's not like national orgs will give over the keys at a school like this so long as they are making money.

So did Sig Ep alumni decide to sell the house? The reply they paid to delete said there was a meeting upcoming.

The alumni sold the house to Sig Ep nationals. So they aren't going anywhere. Also, this was done last year so isn't really news

Alumni still own the house and they owe more than $20,000 in unpaid property taxes

They will be substance free in 2020 and already had a huge amount of brothers drop or go early alumni because of this. Obviously a fraternity is about more than just parties but it is a huge incentive for people to join, why not reward yourself after studying hard all semester? It is shocking to see his far they have fallen since the tragic deaths and then the announcement of the substance free policy.

You can’t artificially boost the attractiveness of chapters to PNMs. Whether or not another sorority is added, it’s the responsibility of exisiting chapters to effectively target, market, recruit, and maintain a strong sisterhood. If a chapter can’t do that, it will not succeed regardless of whether or not another sorority is added to the mix. Also, really tired of the continual “PNMs have too high of expectations” argument. UNC’s sorority system is different than most other schools, in that getting a bid to a lot of houses is predetermined ahead of time and largely based on where girls went to school/how much money they’re presumed to have. Other schools’ rush definitely has this as a component as well, but usually take other factors more heavily into consideration (like the actuall conversations during rounds). The end result is that a lot of pretty, nice, in-state girls are competing for relatively few spots in houses that have otherwise predetermined exactly who they want in their PC. Girls drop at unprecedented rates because of this, and it’s an understandable practice considering how uniquely status-focused UNC’s rush system is while Panhel simaltaneously markets it as the complete opposite. Unless Panhel is able to adjust these practices or some sororities are able to more effectively recruit, another sorority would be the only way to accommodate this issue

It's also interesting to look at the disparity in the number of fraternities vs sororities on campus. There are 27 fraternities recognized now and only 11 sororities. As a result, the average chapter size for sororities is more than triple the average chapter size for fraternities, and the fraternity average is dragged way up by a few huge chapters. For sororities, the top tier is a lot bigger than the bottom - so you have four sororities who mix with the six or seven best fraternities on campus, and only a couple sororities who mix with the 8-10 lower tier fraternities (since most of them refuse to mix with tri sig). Having another sorority (or two), even if they end up being mid or lower tier, would hopefully make our Greek system a little better and balance out the tier sizes a little bit.
