what is block?

I see all this hype about who has who for "block." What is this?
Sorry I know this is dumb but I go to a different school, i'm just bored and perusing GR like a tool.

We don't tailgate at this school for various reasons, mostly the football teams sucks. Frats and sororities pair up and go to the big bars on campus (Clys,Lion,Joes,Kams) and get blacked during game days. Its turned into this petty system to determine rank among houses, who's paired with who etc.

That's what I thought, but assuming you guys only go to like 3 or 4 bars doesn't it turn into 8-10 chapters at one bar.. so I don't see the point of "pairs." It would make more sense if these pairings were at the chapter's house and so it was like every Saturday or whatever you could expect the entire XYZ sorority to come over.
Just my two cents. I go to a big football school, and you guys should just tailgate! We can't tailgate at the stadium anymore so we just have huge backyards where everyone congregates. You could do that but at a frat or whatever instead.
