What makes people in top houses so much better than everyone else?

There's not that much difference (especially for guys) but a combination of looks and personality play a role. Other than that, alumni and history are very important. Also, reputation.

They're really not better people. Generally, people in top houses are either:

1) Legacy
2) Wealthy

That being said, in general, every house has their share of goobs, party animals, douchebags, etc.

There's literally no wealthy guys in any top house here. UIUC is a middle class campus with the exception of some international students.

does not mean a damn thing. Think about human nature. I knew a chick in agd who graduated last year that was probably one of the prettiest girls I have seen in my life. Probably all top houses didn't want her because they didn't want that much competition.
