is greek life for me?

by: anonymous

If I end up transferring to SMU next fall, I plan on going through the recruitment process. Which sororities participate in fall recruitment? Should I rush in the spring? Also, I assume people stereotype sororities by saying they only care about money and race, however, all the talk about it has me concerned. My family has money so I’m not worried about “not fitting in”, but, I’m a little worried about having friends who are overly superficial. I want polite friends who don't openly boast about money or race. Do sororities admire social graces and leadership potential over $ and looks? I genuinely want lifelong friendships, leadership opportunities, and to be involved in the community. Is SMU’s greek life for me?

Your questions are well voiced and sound sincere. Everyone who possesses social grace and politeness values those traits in others and there are plenty in every sorority who appreciate those traits. However there are definitely sororities who are known for taking pride in valuing prospective members with money and social ties over all else, and I won't say who they are because if you decide to transfer you can decide for yourself. But there are other sororities that are much heavier on student leaders - such as student senaters who represent all academic disciplines, exec board members of community organizations that actually make a difference, people who have gotten grants to do projects in other countries (world changers) and millions of opportunities if you just look for them. Be sure to check out every sorority. Some are much more known for both leadership and campus involvement. And when you get to campus make sure you take advantage of "night of the club" where you can learn about the 400 clubs on campus. See if something interests you there, as that's a good way to meet people - doing something you like to do -and you can find future leadership positions in that way.

Thank you for your thoughtful response! Learning about where I can get involved is really important to me so I will definitely check out "night of the club".
