Trending Post from Reddit - Frat Exit (Frexit)
by: Dean Wormer
This post is trending on Reddit: A year ago in August, TKE left the Penn State IFC. In May, Acacia left the Penn State IFC with full support of their National Office. Now Sigma Pi, another major Fraternity at Penn State, has declared their independence. Both Acacia and Sigma Pi face the wrath of Student Affairs - and their boiler plate press releases that get reposted by local press.
Why are these chapters leaving? One reason is because of the one sided hearing process that Penn State uses. In fact Penn State promised the US Federal Government they would fix the one sided process in 2020 - and they did not.
The war that is going on is now obvious and expect to see all the National fraternities support their chapters getting away from the weekly witch hunts that go on. The tactics you ask? “Anonymous sources”. The only charges by the police were against a minority fraternity- that still has not gotten the “you are suspended press release” that Student Affairs does to the others. Sororities also get no press coverage and yes they get into trouble but get double secret probation.
Of course, for three years in a row, another (non Greek) student group - the Lion Ambassadors - have had accusations of hazing made by its members, but Penn State said that it was not hazing…and that the Lion Ambassadors are not a Student Group, when they clearly are.
This should be interesting to watch as Frexit marches on at Penn State.

I agree with a lot of points made by the op. PSU has a troubled history with greek life and it isn't getting better. Rush for both frats and srats is competitive as it is but having it in the spring adds additional competition as many decide to rush last minute. I would love to see PSU improve greek life with srat houses, traditional fall rush, and actual transparency with hazing for both greek life and any org involving students.

A large part of this problem IMO stems from the post-hazing-law regulations implemented by the university and IFC. The official limitations placed on our orgs has reached such a point of arbitrary strictness that any group trying to be active, have a good time, and live up to the standards set by other chapters is prompted to just throw the baby out with the bathwater and neglect any form of regulations whatsoever. As opposed to releasing more common sense and basic safety based rules like many good IFCs do, ours has taken the opposite approach and in doing so has completely delegitimized themselves; every Greek org blatantly violates their rules and suspensions stem merely from lack of "risk" prevention rather than removal of (especially) bad elements.

A comment from a completely different reddit post seems to be a part of the core issue with PSU frats.
"It seems to me that spring rush leaves first year women attending fall semester fraternity parties without someone watching over them, and that can be risky."
This right here is the problem with PSU greek life. Spring rush for both frats and srats causes many alleged allegation to happen as many freshman are sometimes unaware of the system of greek life. These allegations can turn into suspensions without proper research, leaving many frats to go independent from PSU IFC. Srats don't get the same treatment as parties are not being hosted for non-members in the fall like frats. Going to fall rush will cause less frats to be suspended as many of the partygoers will be affiliated with greek life and would less likely file a report that threatens the frat to be suspended.
