what are societies?!

I don't go here but I'm so interested in this..what are they? Are they similar to frats and sororities? Do you guys meet in dungeons with black capes? What is tapping and why do people get tapped, cuz they're good looking, wealthy, what?! Someone please explain this to me this sounds so cool lol
