Sorority Rush Advice

by: senior

For future PNMs, rankings do not matter. Go into recruitment with an open mind and look for a chapter that has a great sisterhood and best suites you. You will find some of your best friends in greek life. Recruitment week can be long and exhausting and sometimes disappointing but make sure to keep pushing through and give each chapter a chance. We have 14 amazing sororities on this campus. There are not just 2 “cool” sororities. All sororities are unique and offer amazing friendships and experiences, there are multiple great houses on this campus. Don’t let social climbers try and get into your head. Go into recruitment for the right reasons not all the wrong ones because in 4 years from now it will not matter. You can walk away with lifelong connections or walk away with nothing. Most girls that join the 2 “top” or “cool” houses walk away with fake friendships and horrible experiences. Join the sweet and genuine sororities and give each amazing chapter here a chance.

Uh, excuse me… but you saying that if you join a top or upper house that you will walk away with “fake friendships, and bad experiences” is so gross. This is you trying to talk girls out of going for a top house. Probably because you couldn’t get into one if you tried. Jealous much??

First of all, I agree with Excuse Me that saying top houses provide fake friendships and horrible experiences is BS. Any house will be like this if its the wrong fit, no matter what its ranking is. And any house can provide an amazing experience if it's a good fit. I graduated 4 years ago and came on here so I could get an idea of what's happening in Greek Life rn to advise my cousin, who'll be rushing this fall. While there were definitely top, middle and bottom houses, there wasn't this kind of petty mean-girl bullying stuff going on like I'm seeing from Excuse Me ("Probably because you couldn't get into one if you tried. Jealous much??") and whoever keeps posting the top 5 house lists. PNMs were always encouraged to keep an open mind and know that EVERY house can provide great fun and friendships. Yes, there was and always will be "hype" about the top houses during recruitment but there wasn't this attitude that anything below the top 6 was worthless. It just seems so immature and catty. We're supposed to be WOMEN not middle schoolers.

I do happen to be in an upper level house and have friends in the top 2 houses. I am so extremely lucky to have the amazing greek experience that I have had. I am writing this based on my experiences, my friends experiences and what I have seen by being on greek row the last 3 years here. I know what houses are genuine and which houses are not. I care deeply for our greek system. Our greek life is struggling because girls drop out of recruitment since they didn’t get a “top” house. So many girls dropped out of recruitment last year because the “top 2” dropped them the first round. Maybe we should be talking about all the good sororities rather than saying if you don’t join the top 2 you are done for. We should also focus on the benefits of greek life than being so negative. I don’t really think pnms are going to read your comment and say yeah I want to be in that girl’s sorority if you are being so mean. I’m not “jealous”, I am trying to bring to light a situation that occurs every year.

I think the whole point of this post is that if you are going into recruitment just trying to get into a top house then you probably will end up with fake friendships and possibly a bad experience. The whole point of recruitment is to find your place and your people. If the only thing you care about is being in a top house you probably aren’t looking for a house that truly is a good fit for you.

I agree though this whole board has turned into mean girls and petty bullying over the last year.
