You can't rush until the spring of your freshman year. For girls, it is formal recruitment that last about 5 days (I think) and for guys its more laid back and rush takes about 3 weeks until you get a bid. I know that panhel will hold an information fair of sorts in the fall, but you really don't have to worry about recruitment until second semester.
