dues, dues, dues

by: strapped for cash

I didn't get the chance to ask every house I went to about the cost of their dues. So please post here if you know the cost of a sorority house, thank you!

Keep in mind that the dues include lunch and dinner (sometimes breakfast) at the house during the week. Great food too!

Dues aren't one-size-fits-all even at one house. New Member dues are a little higher because you have to pay for your pin, etc. Then there are dues for actives which usually include meals (I think some houses have different meal options) and then if you live in house there's the rent you pay to live in. If you live in house, being in a sorority is honestly cheaper than living in a dorm, and the meals are way better than the dining halls. The cost is toughest first semester but after that it is a bargain to be in a sorority vs not.

My parents were more than willing to pay the dues for whatever house I chose during recruitment, but also gave me the option to pocket whatever money was leftover if I chose a less expensive house (the difference between it and the most expensive house). I guess it worked out that my fav just happened to be less expensive. I don't think such a big decision should be based on money but understand it's an important factor. All I can say is pro/con.

My parents gave me the same option! I'm just hoping my less pricey fav doesn't drop me!

I think my parents need to get together with ^^^ parents. I'm starting to realize how much extra costs (other than dues) are involved. My friend currently in a sorority told me she ended up doing a crazy amount of shopping for socials, date functions, chapter attire, etc....it would sure be nice to have extra cash, I'm starting to freak out a bit...

SK's dues are NOT going up with their new house. That is 100% a fact. All dues will remain completely the same. Their finance team has worked very hard to make sure that this is the case.

Will they be cutting from their social budget?

No, they will not be cutting corners at all. They have been saving money for over 40 years and they own the land lot the house will sit on.

You girls have to realize that not every PNM has wealthy parents willing to throw thousands of dollars at their kid's social club. While "money shouldn't matter!" In an ideal world, it DOES matter for women who have to work to pay their dues, like I do. Don't belittle people by saying money shouldn't be the reason they don't choose a house - I loved DDD, but ultimately couldn't afford their dues. PNMs please ask these questions if you have concerns so you don't end up somewhere you'll struggle to afford!

While I agree with your point of view, I don't think anyone on here has said anything to belittle anyone, in fact I think this thread is quite understanding and supportive. It's nice to see everyone being honest and sympathetic to both sides.

It's about $25k - $30k for four years. That's a lot if you are paying for it yourself! And if you use student loans to pay for it that will accumulate with interest to over $100k before you pay it back.

And that's figuring in all the extra costs?

I'm calling bull on this one. I put all of my sorority expenses on my loans and I only have $16,000 in loans...I also worked to pay for small things, but dues/rent when I lived in house were all paid for by loans. I'll also have these loans paid off in 5 years on my current track.
