Harsh advice on rushing?? Sorority

by: Loli

Anyone have any HARSH advice I have no idea what to expect for rushing. I don’t have a huge Instagram presence but I’m pretty and have good grades and good extra curriculars. Is there anything I can do to stand out more? Let me know(pls no cringe like “just be yourself”)

Rush is brutal. It is superficial and shallow. How you look and dress and carry yourself will help you not get cut in some houses. You are lucky to be invited back to Adpi, Kd and Zta. Do not be surprised that you may be cut from those houses after the first round. Keep an open mind about all houses . Where you want to get a bid from May never happen.

It can be harsh for pnm's because of their incorrect assumptions and expectations. If you can reset them you will do so much better. Here's the deal:

Every pnm is pretty with good grades and good extracurriculars. You are in a different peer group in sorority recruitment and don't stand out like you think you do, that's the first thing to understand.

The second is that the recruitment process is not a signup sheet for pnm's, the sororities are doing the choosing. No matter how much a pnm wants or doesn't want certain houses, that's not a factor in their selection process; the sororities don't even see pnm's chapter ranks so they aren't a consideration. Most pnm's will not be invited back to one or more of their favorites and won't even have a full schedule, but they will be given as full of a schedule as possible from among the sororities that want to invite them back. Pnm's do not drop sororities, they only rank them. A pnm's chapter ranks only come into play if more sororities want to invite her back than she has room for on her schedule and so her lowest ones would drop off. THIS IS NOT COMMON AT ALL. Prepare for cuts.

With that said, understand that cuts are not personal, they are only part of a numbers game because each sorority is only allowed a certain number of pnm's back to each round. If you aren't high enough in their rankings to make whatever their cutoff number is, it is not because you have been judged as inferior or lacking somehow, and doesn't mean the girls you talked to wouldn't want to be friends with you. I promise you that discussions of pnm's are about trying to find the positive traits and not about fault finding. Sororities are trying to find who fits with their vibe best so it's about far more than your gpa and resume and the other things. And if you feel like you connected with the girls you talked to, then you did even if you end up getting cut, and those actives will get upset when you don't return. But it's a chapter decision and they have to get over it and keep on rushing. So do you.

Finally, RANKS ARE STUPID, SUBJECTIVE, NOT REAL, ARE MISOGYNISTIC, AND DO NOT MATTER IN REAL LIFE ON CAMPUS. You will find top girls in every house and not so top as well. And no guy cares what letters a pretty, sweet, fun girl wears. Sororities are about sisterhood and a home away from home. TRUST YOUR GUT and don't worry about ranks or what other people are saying.

Also, for further expectation setting, the sororities' Round 1 invitation lists are already made before recruitment even starts. So many pnm's think that they are starting off with a blank slate and that their ranks after the videos will determine where they go for Round 2. No, not at all, it is a done deal before the sororities meet you in person, before you watch their videos, before you put down your ranks of them. The releases were already decided, and there will be a lot of them at this round, so best be prepared to wait and see what your ACTUAL options are that you get back for Round 2 and focus on them. Rank the chapters for Round 1 honestly in how you feel, but remember that your chapter ranks have nothing to do with your getting on anybody's invitation list at any round, they only matter to remove your lowest ranked choices IF you are on more invitation lists than the allowed number of houses to visit.

The only time pnm's ranks actually hold weight is after pref. A pnm will rank her pref houses 1 and 2 on her MRABA card and the chapters will submit their final rankings of the pnm's (there are no cuts after pref, every pnm invited to a chapter's pref is on their bid list somewhere). Here's how the pnm's ranks matter: The bid matching process starts at the top of a chapter's ranked bid list and matches with the pnm's who ranked that house as their #1, skipping over the ones who put them at #2. If you are high enough on your #1's bid list to match with them before they reach quota then you will get their bid. If you are not high enough, the process will then try to match you with your #2. If you are high enough on their bid list to match before they reach quota then you will get their bid. But if you are not high enough to match with them either before they reach quota, then you will still get a bid from either of those depending on a combination of factors: your ranks of the two chapters, your rank placement on the two bid lists, chapter size and new member class size. In this way pnm's are guaranteed bids IF they rank both their pref houses, even when it puts a chapter over quota. BUT if you go to two prefs and only put one on your card and you are not high enough to match with that one chapter, then you are out of the process and will not get a bid at all, so only make this decision if there is absolutely no way on Earth you would consider even giving your other pref house a chance. Also, it's good news if you are only invited to one pref and you put them on your card because you are getting that bid and can relax; you know where you're going on bid day.

So what are they looking for from pnms? During each round what do they look for specifically?

Every chapter is looking for the same things: cute, sweet, fun and an asset to the sorority. But that means something different to each chapter based on their particular priorities and their own group vibe/personality. One chapter's first round cut is another's 'it girl'. It's all about BEST FIT.

For Round 1 the chapters will consider all the pnm's information over the summer: resume, GPA, social media, the 90 second video, and connections with pnm's they already know from high school or hometown or summer camp or from close personal sources. Get your forms in as early as you can so sororities have time to review, you don't want to get lost in the shuffle late in the summer. This includes recs too, which won't get you a bid but they don't hurt either. Clean up your social media, follow ALL the chapters, and do your best on your video. If you have any connections whatsoever to any current members, let them know you are rushing so they can get you some attention. If you don't have any connections it's not the end of the world, don't sweat it.

Rounds 2 and 3 are all about your personality, how you present your best self in person, and the interest you show. Do not try to anticipate what you think they are looking for, you will have a terrible rush. You are having conversations, not interviews or tests, so chapters will try to pair you with actives that you have something in common with to make these conversations go as well as possible and bring out your PERSONALITY. Try to show ease and confidence even when you are nervous, a polished appearance even when you are exhausted, and interest in the chapter even when you are feeling out of it. Everything comes down to how you vibe with them; actives will recognize a great fit and you will too. Your own intuition is very important during rush, don't ignore it. Again, BEST FIT.

If you absolutely love a chapter you need to tell them so at Round 3 because if they are unsure how you feel about them you won't make it to the next round, which is Pref.

At Pref if you have a clear favorite, tell them so; you want to get ranked high on their bid list.
