The truth about being in a frat

by: recent grad

I graduated this spring so I can finally drop this. Most frats have just as much drama and cliqueyness as sororities. Plenty of houses have beef with each other and a lot of guys refuse to talk to guys who aren’t in their frat. Sometimes it gets so bad that rival chapters will report each other since it’s anonymous. There’s also internal tensions between brothers. While rare, I’ve seen brothers get into fist fights. It’s easy to find one nights but pretty hard to find an actual girlfriend since everyone will assume you sleep around. Some of your brothers are going to think they’re in a brothel rather than a brotherhood. Others are going to be touchy and generally sus. It’ll get brushed off now but they’ll probably be spotted on grinder after they graduate. A lot of people who aren’t in greek life will automatically assume you’re a total douchebag if they know you’re in a frat. Depending on which house you’re in you’re going to love or hate it because let’s be for real, some frats have crappy or really dirty houses. If you’re in a bottom or low middle frat the ratio at parties is going to suck and you’re going to get a lot less girls than the guys in more highly ranked frats. Most frats have some light hazing but a rare few seem to want their brothers to have ptsd. If you’re in a frat you really need watch yourself these days because the university is cracking down on a lot of things. They have no problem putting chapters on probation, suspending them, or kicking them off of campus. Don’t be the guy/guys that are the downfall of your fraternity chapter. While this may be discouraging to some, Greek life is absolutely worth it. I met my lifelong brothers and made some pretty awesome memories. If you’re a chill dude you’ll have a much better time and people will like you more than the those self obsessed guys that think it’s high school 2.0 or are only there to party and pick up girls. As long as you and your brothers stay out of any real trouble these will be some of the best years of your life.
