sigma pi suspended

by: chico

so word on the street is sigma pi is kicked off, this leaves

theta chi
sigma nu
alpha sig
phi delt
phi tau
kappa sig

what's going to happen? the only strong fraternity left is theta chi it looks like. also with only 6 fraternities... is greek life even worth it? and phi felt, phi tau, and kappa sig all have less than 30 members. it's going to be strange next year.

Fraternities need school affiliation, everyone leaving school affiliation isn't realistic. Middle houses that do good in recruitment will rise up and become top houses. I see nothing but potential in Sigma Nu, Phi Tau, and Kappa Sigma. All 3 of them will supposedly have annex houses next year in good locations.

This isn't the first time top houses (Sigma Pi, Sigma Chi) have been wiped off the map in Chico's history. Between 2002-2005 there were over 17 school affiliated fraternities, most of the top houses during this era were kicked off campus, the same is happening again in our era.

I do not agree. I think the greek system would benefit if the fraternities disaffiliated with the school. It has happened at other schools before. I think that next year if fraternities keep having parties and what not then everyone will get kicked off and there will be only a few ones left.

The university doesn't care about fraternities partying. They just didn't want anyone partying last year at all because of the suspension. Sadly certain fraternities decided to to party ignoring the university and their terminations are the result.

i have no idea how you see potential in phi tau or kappa sig. both of them have barely enough members to fill their houses. phi tau has no annex houses now and doesn't have any next year. kappa sig is losing their 8th and ivy house and the 420 house, the only two houses that were theres.

And yes, this is reminiscent of the 2005 purge. However, greek life was just recovering from that purge and it was just kicked back to square one. It will be at least another 7 years or so before greek life "recovers". Greek life is a shadow of its former self and will never be the same. We're starting the year with 6 fraternities, and only one of them is worth joining honestly...

also, if you think the university doesn't care about greeks partying you're delusional. the school wants to rid itself of its party school reputation and it's starting where it has power: the greek system. the new noise ordinance is the tip of the ice burg, look at the social host ordinance the city is drafting up that the school is pushing heavily.

Everything is just being speculated, no one knows exactly what will happen with the Greek system in Chico next year. In my opinion everyone will go rouge and the fraternities with larger houses will have a major advantage against those with smaller houses. All freshman care about is joining a fraternity that throws parties frequently even if no sorority girls attend the parties, PIKE is a prime example of this. One thing I'm certain about is that Theta Chi will remain top house unless their nationals pull recognition.

Just because 3 organizations out of the 14 made poor choices that got them kicked off doesn't mean the entire system is going to collapse. Loosing 3 organizations is such a minor dent in the Greek community. Over half of the organizations would need to be suspended for the system to collapse.

yes it's only 3 out of 9 social fraternities but all 3 of those were strong chapters. the only chapters worth anything that are left are sigma nu and theta chi and sigma nu is borderline.

That's why if the rest of them do good in recruitment they can easily become a top house since their isn't as much competition. No one will wants to join a independent fraternity, jimmy tatros Pi Kappa Phi is proof. They were top house at UofA but when they got kicked off they haven't been able to get any pledges cause their GDIs now.

it will be at least three years until those fraternities are considered decent... the most recent pledge class of weirdos will have to graduate before anyone takes them seriously and that's with three straight years of solid recruitment. good luck!!!

You're the reason why the Greek system was suspended to begin with. The school administration asked all the organizations to re-read their charters. Clearly you haven't if your judgeing others based on their appearance and are calling them "weird" because they look differently and act differently from you. Every NIC fraternity follows strict bylaws to prevent discrimination.

With 3 fraternities gone, this may be a good opportunity for a new fraternity(s) to begin at Chico. A new fraternity(s) that will help promote and strength Greek Life so supsension like what happen in the past don't happen in the future.
