the fraternity landscape

by: Fun in the Sun

Getting straight to the point here is the fraternity landscape as I see it in 2015. Let's start with the historic 'top 4'. Some of the earliest fraternities/social clubs to colonize are also some of the best to date. They include in no specific order: KOT, Phi Delt, SAE, and Kappa Sig. These four have each been the top fraternity on campus at point in their existence. The ‘top 4’ all have the best parties at Baylor, and as a group the most money, and stronger traditions. KOT is known as more of a husband fraternity and they have more date functions and other events than all out parties, whereas Phi Delt and SAE have late nights/parties/pregames on most weeks of the year. Kappa Sig is sort of a blend between the KOTs and the Phi Delts and SAE. There is a very similar breed of guys that are split between KOT and Kappas Sig rushees. The same could be said about the grouping of Phi Delt and SAE.

Closest to the top 4 is ATO and Fiji(not at the moment). ATO has nice guys who are very active with on-campus activities, but a sub par social atmosphere, while Fiji has decent guys, better parties, but was on probation not too long ago. Before their probation they were the closest to the top 4 out of all the fraternities. Assuming they do get back, they'll need a few strong pledge classes to get back to where they were.

Delt, Sig Ep, and Pi Kapp struggle for the same crop of guys during rush. There is a huge gap here and the upper tier fraternities. Delt tends to have an edge on rushing but, Pi Kapp and Sig Ep of late have caught up in recent semesters. Delt probably is better if you want to have more fun in a traditional fraternity setting whereas Sig Ep and Pi Kapp both have a 'try hard' reputation. Their biggest threat comes from Baylor’s two newest re-chartered chapters: Sigma Chi (2015) and KA (2016). Pi Kapp and lesser so Sig Ep don’t have the reputation and years of history on campus as some of the better fraternities. Pi Kapp was only started in the early 2000s, Sig Ep has been here for a while, but there reputation made them hardly noticeable until recently. These fraternities are known to have wild ragers once in a while.

All the other fraternities are fairly irrelevant and are mainly for people who don't know much about fraternities going into college. Nevertheless in fairness: Phi Chi is one of the two Christian fraternities on campus. Their founding class were de-pledges from KOT in the 80s, but they are in all actuality miles away from anything resembling top tier. BYX is another Christian fraternity, although not local and has other chapters like the other IFC chapters. They are sort of an old ball mix of guys that seem nice, but dorky. Beta is sort of the king of nerds chapter here. Since coming on campus again last year, they haven’t been able to shake off their former rep. However they have been active and have made attempts to improve, but probably will stay in the cellars of fraternity ranking until the likes of some other new/re-chartered fraternity takes its place.
With all is in mind, you really can't go wrong with anyone as long as you feel like you fit in with the guys there. This post mainly focused on parties because a lot of the other aspects aren't public. Just enjoy rush and don't get be stupid.
Oh yeah, and then there is TKE.

Not to nit pick too much but you do realize Sigep has been on campus since 1976? They were also a local before that dating back to the 1950s.

Just saying

Sigma Chi also has been at Baylor since 1977 and in general was always considered one of the best. They have been kicked off for four years and have started back with a new crew. But let's not act like they are some group with no history at Baylor.

All true, but they have to start from somewhere, and with their founding class, it looks like they will be mid tier for a few years at least.

You're giving phi delt way too much credit.

They were good for one decade back in the 1980s when mark hurd and trey wingo were members. Since 1990 they have been a 40 man drinking club.

Even today they only have about 65 members.

They rush the same kids they don't get bids to KOT/Ksig/SAE.

SigEp is much closer in to Delt/Fiji than PiKapp in terms of social standing, history, and rush classes.

Phi Delt is more like Delt or SigEp. They are the biggest tryhards on campus just like Pi Kapp and SogEp. This is a bad post

Phi Delt has like 60 members and just about anyone can join.

They usually bid 90% of the guys who come out to interview with them.

Nothing about them is "top tier"
