There is a reason that you don’t know.... nice and pretty doesn’t necessarily equal good grades or good conversation or good reputation. There could be a number of reasons why someone gets cut that has nothing to do with her face, hair or clothes.

Most of the cuts would happen anyway, so it's far better to go ahead and release pnm's early so they can move on to houses where they actually have a chance at a bid. It used to be that houses could keep inviting back as many as they wanted even though they never intended to bid most of these girls; it just looked good to have so many girls attending their parties. This lead tons of girls on and made them feel like they were wanted, so the girls would cut other houses and eliminate their other choices where they actually had a chance. Then the sororities would make their big cut right before the final night (prefs), leaving girls out in the cold without any houses left. It's so much better now, actually allowing far more girls to get bids. The system works. And no, none of these chapters would be allowed to opt out by their nationals. What's the point of being national and NPC if you just want to act like a lame local GLO...

So, how many girls are left at the end who want bids but don't get any?

It depends on the girl. As you long as you "optimize your options" after the last round (i.e. rank every single house that you went to and don't only include one) you are 100% guaranteed a bid. Now that girls only attend 2 houses instead of 3 like how it used to be, I think the amount of girls who do that has significantly decreased.

PNM's are guaranteed a bid if they put both houses where they pref on their card, or just the one if that's all they have. A higher percentage of PNM's get their first choice, but this is not guaranteed for anyone. A PNM who only puts down one house out of her two, called "suiciding," is not guaranteed that bid, so the PNM's who go all the way to pref but end up without a bid at all either took their chances and suicided and didn't get that house, or intentionally dropped after pref.

Recs help, legacy helps, but they are not guarantees and no house has to take anyone. It is completely the choice of the sorority. There is no shame in being cut from any house; it doesn't mean you're not worthy and it's not personal. RFM limits how many can be invited back, and amazing girls get released each round. It's not you, it's a numbers game. Hold your head up and move forward.
