Many people in the greek population right now never experienced 2016. That year had a bunch of people actually over 1000 members, but there was a huge problem. Back then you could only talk to a house you joined. All the 10 frats talked mad about each other, because they wanted to prove who was the best. The sororities were not the best either, but were quieter. This did create some competition and turf wars that were interesting to watch, but went absolutely no where with productivity.
Now if you jump to current day after a budget crisis some hazing incidents we now are just shy of 500 people. Because of all these new people that joined when it was still competitive, but safer we now are on the right path again. Most of the members support one another's chapters to succeed and genuinely care if they fail. Because a lot of new people joined the hazing is basicaly gone. The parties are for the most part safe. Most people want to get to know each other because the tension is way less than 2016. These are the legit reasons to join. It seems like everybody wants to grow and it is only a matter of time until we get a bigger group of healthy members again.
There are a lot of negative connotations attached to Greek life and it just isn’t like that here at EIU. It is a smaller school and going greek really helps to make it feel like a community. Everyone looks out for each other, and has fun doing it. Joining Greek life was the best decision I made as a freshman and I highly encourage everyone thinking about it to go through!! Find your home, and enjoy your time here at EIU
Greek life is a blast here. The biggest problem is that Illinois all around had an enrollment drop and budget problem for about 5 years. Now that this is slowly getting resolved we now will get back on track to having more involvement. The positive of a smaller greek life currently just about everybody wants to get to know each other. This is in the long run will make greek life an attractive option to join, because of greek unity.
Greek life at eiu is relatively small compared to large universities. This is beneficial because you get to know lots of women and men in other houses! Greek unity is very important here. From someone who has gone through the rush process at Eastern, don't trust negative comments about specific sororities or fraternities on campus. Most of the time these are not a realistic representation of the house. I recommend you stay open minded and positive through the process. As long as you trust your gut and feel each house out for yourself you will find your home!
The Greek life at EIU is so inclusive where everyone is truly a family! Go greek! It will change your life for the better!
Very Welcoming! I would totally recommend going greek at EIU because it will make your college experience great!
It is very inclusive and will make your college experience!
GO GREEK!! do not listen to people... this community is the reason this school is fun!! if you want to be involved at eiu, this is your first step. we are the most involved on campus, it is NOT like big schools with intimidating recruitment and people...it's really fun, you get to know amazing people, there's awesome opportunities. SIGN UP FOR RECRUITMENT!!!!!!!!
greek life needs to be restructured here because there's great people in each house but the university needs to support it more in order for the numbers to be how it was in the past
I love Greek life here at EIU but it’s always a constant competition between which frat is associated with what sorority. There’s great Greek unity during Greek week even though we’re actually competing then because a lot of us have friends in different houses. Overall I’m super happy I went Greek
