house preferences
by: pnm20
I watched recruitment unfold from afar and am so excited to be attending MSU next year and going through recruitment! While I love all of the pix and vids the sororities post, I haven't seen anything about if they prefer instate, out of state, or are open to non-southern pmns. I'll be coming from the midwest but my folks are from the south and I plan on living and teaching in MS after I graduate.
Do the houses tell us if they are open to non-southern pnms? And will I get cut from certain houses because of it even though I have a high GPA, hs leadership, tons of volunteer involvement, plus other activities and awards?

XO, DG, KD - prefers instate girls but they do accept OOS as well. If you are from a boarder state (like Tennessee) your chances are much higher than if you were from New Jersey. Being a legacy and having connections helps a ton if you are OOS but I know my sorority has picked girls from the Midwest with no connections and were not a legacies as well. They were just great girls with a great resume and we just had to have them. This isn’t common but It happens every year! I am also an OOS girl from the Midwest. I was a legacy with connections so I got in my legacy house- however I made it pretty far with another “top” house without either of those things so sometimes it’s just luck! I was super surprised! Sometimes being OOS helps because your high school reputation and the silly mistakes you made don’t follow you the way It would if you were in-state.
Phi Mu- Pretty similar to the other houses but are slightly more open to taking OOS girls especially if you are stunning or are on a sports team.
Pi phi, Tri Delt, Zeta- they have a huge mix of OOS and instate girls. Being OOS will not be a disadvantage here! Honestly I find that OOS girls are typically happier in these houses because they are going to be full of girls that are more similar to you than in the “top houses”. OOS girls are usually more open to making friends than the in-state girls are. High school cliques typically don’t follow them here either which is nice. I know in my sorority we got a ton of girls from a “desirable” Mississippi high school and the girls pretty much just hung out with each other like they did in high school. I also wasn’t used to the whole Mississippi southern culture that is super prevalent in top houses, so It was hard to adjust. However, as an OOS I still love my sorority and have a ton of friends but I wish I would’ve given the other houses more consideration for this reason.
Adpi- Most accepting of OOS girls and are incredibly diverse.
