rules

by:

What are some of the "rules" different sororities have? Such as a type of clothing you cant wear, how you can look in public, when you can/can't wear letters, when you have to wear pin attire, etc?

I'm not trying to stir anything up -- I am genuinely curious. I only know the rules for my own house but I want to compare them to others! I think it will be fun to see the differences and similarities.

You can't wear stitched letters with leggings, can't wear the crest until you're initiated, and wear pin attire to chapter

No houndstooth, ever. No drinking in letters.

I know this is an old comment so maybe it’s outdated but why no houndstooth? I feel like I see a lot of girls wearing it now, especially on game days

Need to look polisihed in public at all times, especially while wearing letters (nice pants, pretty makeup, hair done appropriately), no workout shorts/leggings/distressed denim with stitched letters, no wearing the crest until after initiation, no drinking or smoking in letters (ever), wear Pin Attire to Chapter and certain other special events. Also we are told that we are always "advertising" for our sorority, even when not wearing letters, so we have to behave in a classy/lady like way in public situations.

I don't get the "stitched letters" rule, would you mind explaining it to me?

When y'all say "letters" does that mean the Greek letters only? Take for example Kappa, would "letters" mean "KKG" or are you not allowed to do stuff with a shirt that says "Kappa" also? Or DG for example, is a shirt that says "DG" or "Delta Gamma" on it different that a shirt that has the Greek delta and gamma?

I only ask because I've noticed a few girls out and they're definitely drinking with their sorority shirts on (underage too) but I've noticed that the shirts always have the name spelled out. Or is this illegal too but their Standards doesn't know/doesn't care?

You aren't suppsed to drink in letters at ANY time (especially not underage- unless you're asking for a standards hearing). It does seem to matter "more" if the letters are Greek letters, but you still shouldn't be drinking in letters, even if the name of your group is spelled out. It's tacky and disrespectful to our values and ideals.

Not allowed to sit at the head of the dinner table until initiated. Cant use the front stairs to enter the sorority house until initiated.

There are no formal sit-down meals anymore. Everything is paper plates and plastic utensils and you go through the line with everyone coming and going on their own schedules, and most tables are round, but okay.

That's great that your sorority has round dining tables. Thanks you SO MUCH for enlightening us. This is still a rule at my house even though we don't have formal dinners, "but okay". Is it strictly enforced? No. But it's just a random rule we have.

My house doesn’t have round tables either.

Not entering through the front of the house sounds like KD. In the old Zeta house only seniors were allowed to use the main interior stairs. Everyone else had to use the other stairs.

Every house has varying rules about appearance before you are initiated (rules about ponytails, wet hair, wearing makeup, clothing, etc.) and some houses are absolutely ridiculous and strict about it because they think they are looks houses. Almost every house has rules about drinking with letters on and being in bars before initiation. Some have rules about not wearing too much house merch at one time. Everyone has rules about attending chapter and other meetings, sisterhood events, philanthropy participation, behavior at parties, etc.

If you don't like rules, sorority life is not for you.

Also, the rules are enforced by Actives in positions of power. I don't know one house that doesn't play favorites about enforcement. Be prepared for that BS. It happens to a certain degree in EVERY house.
