Each house handles legacies differently. I wouldn't worry about legacy status and what that gets you, and focus more on putting your best foot forward and impressing the actives for who you are. After all, wouldn't you rather be in a chapter because they love you, and not because you are a legacy?

^ That's exactly what I decided when I went through. I was preffed by two houses--my old row legacy house (talking legacy as in the past six generations of my mom's side have been in this sorority) and another house that I didn't have the same legacy connections, but I loved the girls. I very, very slightly preferred my legacy house going into pref (just because of my legacy status, and I liked the idea of continuing the tradition), but I would not have been upset to end up in the other house. The girl who preffed me at my legacy house told me, and I quote, "We want you because you are a legacy." From that moment, I knew I was going to the other house. I got along with these girls, but I knew I would always be wondering if I only got in because I had such a legacy lineage. I'm still very close to some of the sisters in that house, but I don't regret choosing my house. My family was upset that I didn't join my legacy house, but I explained my reasoning and they see how happy I am in my house, and they don't have a problem with it.
Moral of the story: It's cool to be your mom's sister and all, but it's not everything. It's more important (to everyone) that you are happy with your house.
