Oh, Ching, you're so ignorant. Nobody shops at Galleria anymore. Only the best tiny boutiques in the Tiny Kingdom are worthy of our platinum card.

Ew. I know sarcastic but sorta insightful too. Are the old row frats pretty much a bunch of Huntin and fishin' and golfin' bubbas, just from connected areas? What frats have the mountain bike, music festival, pay attention to my wife guys? And who swaps w them?

Not all guys in a old row are like that, but for the guys you're looking for look at the bigger new row houses.

Most offer a lifetime of mediocre alumnae because they're not strong nationally. If you don't want to live in Alabama, you might want to adjust your sights and take a look at some of the "more diverse" chapters.

Think about where you're from and where you want to live after graduation. If you're from Alabama and want to move home after graduation, a Southern house is perfect for you.

If you're not from Alabama and/or plan to live elsewhere after graduation, I think that a less Southern house's girls will have more in common with you, and offer more opportunities after graduation.

There are some big Southern houses here who have very little alumnae presence on the East or West coasts. Also, my real sister pledged a very "Mississippi tradition" house at Ole Miss (our legacy) and did not fit in with the girls very well because she wasn't from Jackson. Her best friends all ended up in chapters that attract OOS girls (we are from TX) and I think she would have been happier in one of those houses than her prestigious Mississippi house.

Even though I am just starting college this reminds me that alumnae chapters in areas where I may want to be ultimately may be something to think about. Had not thought beyond sort of a pack mentality yet.

However, with OOS so dominant here, for over a decade, even southern chapters will have a thriving young alumni base now. So you can choose to hang out with the moms wherever you want to go after graduation, or find out where the adorable girls are in your desired areas.

This makes no sense. Just because OOS girls have pledged AGD /KD/ AOPi at Bama for 10 years doesn't mean there is a thriving AGD young alumnae group in DC, NYC, LA, Dallas, Houston, etc. Bama isn't that big in the larger scheme of things....maybe the alumnae chapters in Atlanta or Nashville are bigger now, but most of OOS are coming from further away than Georgia or Tennessee now.

A Texas girl who pledges Pi Phi / Kappa/ Theta/ Chi O will have a great experience at Bama AND move home to a young (20-something's who happy hour & brunch, not moms) alumnae group with 200-300 members. Someone who is from the West Coast would enjoy the lifetime benefits of pledging DG or Phi Mu more than KD/ADPi/AGD.

Considering lifetime membership is smart, especially for OOS PNM's who have grown up watching their sisters / moms/ aunts be very involved with their alumnae chapters and wish to do the same.

Add DDD and maybe even ZTA to your Texas list. Those are the TX "big 6". ZTA is more spotty in Texas tho, but DDD is good pretty much everywhere.

I have to agree with "Wha??" I recently graduated and moved back home to Texas for grad school and one of the reasons I picked the sorority that I did was for the alumni presence and strength. Also something to consider, someone from Texas might go PKT + Tri Delt, XO or the West Coast go APhi, GPhi, DG simply because their rec letters from those areas will be stronger. Like for me, I personally knew many women in those Texas sororities who were big doners and former presidents, but for KD, Phi Mu, AGD, AOPi, APhi, I had "info only" recs because I couldn't find anyone who I knew in those sororities. I was dropped by KD and AGD but stayed on with Tri Delt, XO, and Kappa, probably because of the strength of my recs.

You make valid points.

If you look at the different nationals' websites, even southern sororities have many alumnae associations in places like California, Illinois, and the northeast. Don't assume.

Just because a sorority has an alumnae association somewhere doesn't mean it's a vibrant and active group. It may be 5 70-year old ladies or it could be a huge 400+ member association where the younger, single girls do activities at night and moms & older women do activities during the day.

A tradition southern house at Bama means you still possess an elite and accomplished life, in the eyes of those in Alabama who live such a life. It's nothing but social Alabama grooming. It's a small world for those in it because they haven't ventured out of the state. They also are not too welcoming of pmns from out of the south, although they are gaining ground, and that is only because more girls rushing are from out of state and out of the south.

For some reason Alabama people don't want to acknowledge that Alabama alum live all over this country and there are strong alum chapters out of the south. Alabama alum also like to send their offspring to Bama for an education. Alabama alum also contribute $$$$ to the university.
