"old row"

by:

How do y'all even decide what "Old Row" is? ADPi, Zeta, and DZ were all founded at alabama before other "Old Rows" (DDD,AGD,XO,AXO,KKG) in fact the only "Old Row" that was here before ADPi and Zeta is KD. So I'm a little confused

Old Row and New Row doesn't matter at all for sororities. It sortve matters for fraternities, but even then there are plenty of good new row fraternities.

Oh okay, thanks. I just see a lot of people on here comparing old and new row and it doesn't make any sense to me

New to this... Who/what do they pay? (I assumed old row mean first there, or longest tradition)

DZ & Zeta can't be sponsored by Budweiser (which old row is) per nationals

Traditionally it just meant that Budweiser used to sponsor them and so they paid more. I know some Greek organizations' nationals wouldn't let them be associated with a beer company and that's literally the only reason they're new row. It really doesn't mean anything anymore, it's just something that people like the pretend matters. It's a cool status I guess but there are many new row sororities and fraternities that are better than old row ones for sure so don't let that affect your decision in any way when going Greek

I was thinking it was only about where they are located and the old row has been there longer, houses seem more impressive from street. Typically more selective with pledge classes and majority in state members.

Well you're not wrong. It has it's roots in where all the older houses were originally. And while I agree that the houses are nice and their pledge classes are generally more selective, I no longer think it's because they're known as "Old Row." Those fraternities simply have a good enough reputation to act in such way, that's about it.

A beer company influences who is old row?

Now it means nothing. It is for marketing beer and is an distinction without a difference. People with a history at Alabama know that for girls the first sororities (and some would say the most exclusive) are called first circle, not old row. My house is a first circle house and I'm 4th generation in that house.

I am an active and not a legacy but I think this is cool to have a fourth generation legacy. I wish, perhaps easy now that I a. On other side, legacy actually meant more in recruitment than it does. Neat to see multiple generations.

Except old row is no longer sponsored by Budweiser...

Regardless like the above posters said, it doesn't really matter.

The terms originally applied to fraternities only and referred to the old fraternity row (west of the Quad) and new fraternity row University east of the Quad and Fraternity Lane. Sororities were known as "First Circle" and "Second Circle," which were parts of the streets about 6 decades ago.
