recs
by: ua19How necessary are recommendations for rush? Will I have a chance of getting a bid to a top house without them?
#1 by: Well
I'm an active and recommendation chair currently taking a break from entering recommendations into our database.
It's doable to do it without a rec, but a rec is your introduction to us. We've had recs coming in for months and my sisters and I have a lot of girls that we want to rush hard into our house. I'm not saying it's impossible, but unless we love you and get our advisors to write you a rec, you won't be on our bid list simply because we require a rec letter in order to extend a bid.

Put it this way....recruitment is something a lot of girls have worked years if not their ENTIRE lives for. They have known they were legacies to certain houses and have been getting the grades, forming the connections, and rounding out their resumes. These girls got top notch rec letters. You might be the most fab girl, but getting no rec letters shows to us that you didn't take recruitment as seriously. We're looking for 4 year girls. Not getting a letter (especially for houses that are really competitive) is not a good sign. Most "top houses" could fill like 4 pledge classes entirely with legacies who you damn well bet have like 3 rec letters each. I'm not saying you have 0% chance, but with no rec letters going for a "top house" only seems too optimistic. We, as actives, put in so much hard work and we want to see that reflected in PNMS, too. I would definitely not be too set on just top houses, because without recs, I could see that not happening. Middle tier? Yeah, you'll probably be fine.

I know for our house you CANNOT get past philanthropy without a rec. If we LOVE you we will call our alums and make them write something for you but it's literally against our organization's bylaws to keep someone without a rec letter and I'm sure it's similar for other houses

Also, people write recs because they know some great girl is going through recruitment and they want to let their house know to watch out for her. My mom writes recs for girls from church and camp that may not even know she's doing it. She also writes for girls that ask, but she loves helping her old house by alerting them to an especially great pnm that might fly under the radar.

Chances are they did have a rec but they weren't aware if it... If a house scopes out a girl before recruitment and they don't see a rec, they will find an alum from her hometown to write one. Happens more often than you realize.... But only for girls who are super special
