mountain brook?

by:

OK, I live on the west coast and am a sorority alum of a west coast university. I've seen a few people post the Chi O story on Facebook today, so I came to this site to get more of the gossip. Which I know is lame, but oh well.

Anyway, after reading all of these comments and threads about someplace called "Mountain Brook," I had to Google it. Are you kidding me that this place - a place with a median income of $100k, which is less than what I make just 10 years out of college - is the richest place in Alabama? This is what all the sororities and fraternities get themselves worked up over?

I looked up some real estate listings in Mountain Brook, and you have no idea what a STEAL it looks like to people from the west coast. $500k for a 4 bedroom house? We pay close to or more than $1MM for that in any trendy neighborhood or good suburb within an hour commute of the major city closest to where I live.

So I think it's kindof hysterical that the "top" sororities at Bama are the ones who focus so much on in-state "rich" girls from Mountain Brook, when in fact the out-of-state girls going to the "lower" houses might actually come from more money!

Someone mentioned Highland Park? Do kids from HP actually go to Alabama? In the top 15 high schools in the country on a regular basis. You can't even compare MB with HP. Hp most desirable zip code in an area with 4 million plus people. By the way, the developer/designer of Beverly Hills designed Highland Park after it, similar in appearance. George Bush lives in Preston Hollow in a very modest home.
Earlier comment said HP but Jerry Jones, Troy Aikman, Tony Romo, Perots, Hunts, Texas governors and the wealthiest people in Texas and the US live here. Price for entry is a million plus and it only gets you a lot/tear down on a smaller lot. West coast poster, now you have heard of Highland Park, google it.

I did, thanks. Still not as wealthy as the town I grew up in. But looks like a nice place. Developed by some dudes from Philadelphia, btw - only laid out by the landscape designer of BH.

New England old money > Southern old money. I love it here at UA but when I hear these so called "rich Alabama kids" brag about money I can't help but laugh. OOS are hauling ton's of cash in. The new row men and woman are look ed down upon by old money/old row but in reality they have more money and they are most definitely more cultured. New England holds the original waspy old money that comprises the REAL American elite. Oh.... and stop copying preppy Northern clothing (bean boots, Vinyard Vines) to make it seem like your state is all wealthy and relevant.

But Southerners still have tact. Which by the way, you lack. And, the women in New England have weathered faces. Ha ha years of no make-up, and horrible clothing to boot. There, do I sound like your area with no manners? good

have heard of a Southern Lady. Can't say I have ever heard of a New England "Lady". However, I am aware of "Locust Valley Lockjaw" - annoying nasal accent, very attractive - not.

Southern ladies say "y'all". Up North....how can I say this....the population that says "y'all" tends not to join the Greek system.

I have lived on the west coast and the south, and yes my family made more money in California but we also spent more money. In Florida, my home state, my parents make less money but also dramatically spend less money. Also both the South and California have their draws and everyone should experience them before making dumb comments about both.

Actually born in Fla, very old money. Sold our plantation to "Disney" have lived in 7 states. Adult years in CA.

Still have means, but I learned Grace at a young age. Of all those places I grew learned much:
I loved the ppl from the south because they know what it's like to be a good neighbor, most are warm and friendly with wonderful social graces.

Midwest I admired the strong work ethic not going to rest until the job is done.
North, love the seasons and improved my skills to actually eat left overs because there is no take out in a blizzard. They have the most appreciation for the arts and are obsessed with name brands.

West/CA has the best weather. Most healthy people. Fresh foods everywhere.
What I like most is the cultural acceptance. You learn to look at people From the inside. No one is in your ear telling you to avoid that house.

Moral of ths post......we all bring things to the table just smile and be glad

this is greekrank, why are you on here talking about money,I know alabamas greek system is better than any greek system in the west coast by a mile so if you wanna talk about that, this is what this website is for, and you could probably afford to live here but that money wouldn't get you a bid and that's a fact

What sororities do these ladies typically bid? This seems like a parent thread so hoping for honest responses.

Mostly.

They would rather drop than go new row, with very limited exception.

Pretty sad.

You can always count on them to post something tacky like this. Everything is money to them, so they won't understand.

I have always felt that in state students resent oos, or maybe it's just the in state moms on here! The thing is that oos tuition is powering a lot of the growth of a school that we all love. And oos students typically have higher grades/test scores so we are raising the academic status of UA. Alabama residents have lower admissions standards and an easier time qualifying for scholarships so it's not as though we are taking things from in state students. And yes, we are here because we love this school. Roll Tide!
