Why do so many sororities start with the word “Alpha?

ADP, AGD, AOP, AP, AXO - that’s almost 30% of Bama’s sororities.

Is there some significance to the word Alpha or is it coincidence?

My guess is that it’s because their letters are individual words and it makes sense to have Alpha be the first letter? My sorority’s letters don’t start with Alpha and it’s because our three letters are the words in a sentence in Greek and the first word in the sentence starts with a different letter.

In some cases it may be because it is the first letter of the greek alphabet.
