Out if State girls

by:

As an active - I am going to give some advice.
1. Keep an open mind throughout recruitment.
2. Don't think you know a house based on their social media and the actives they feature.
3. If you are from out of state, MOST of old row is a majority of in state girls. There are some OOS girls - however, a lot of these girls know one another and almost have their new class list. If someone posts on here otherwise, they are not being truthful.
Below is copied from another post - and it hits the nail on the head:

Being out of state you can pretty much completely ignore a few sororities that only take girls from specific areas, I was out of state and I got into a sorority that I LOVE! Most of the “top” sororities are only considered that because they have an air of exclusivity from all being girls from the same high school and they write their own press. They are top because they’ve said they are for years. Personally I went out of state because I didn’t care to relive high school and I love meeting new people! Being an out of state PNM you’ll have a chance to really branch out and find a new group and sisterhood in your sorority if you take it!

Yup! As an active from Mobile - I went NR and couldn't be happier in my house. Didn't want to have to go 13th grade.

By: Go girl!
by: Hahaha

Love it - 13th grade!
Ladies - go into recruitment with an open mind. Please do not fall in love with a certain house or have a "rush crush" with a girl. Things change each round and the only ones that matter are the two you pref.

Appreciate this post! I’m OOS coming to Bama because of a scholarship and I plan to rush, but have no idea what I’m doing.

Based on your post, it sounds like the OR houses already have lists of the girls they want. Is this true? Do NR houses also have lists? Can my high school GPA help get me on one of those a lists for NR?

I’d just like to be in a sorority that has an actual house and friendly girls who get reasonably good grades. I had a 4.0/4.6+ in high school, but assume OR houses with top grades won’t take me.

Do I really need 2 recs for each house? One of my teachers was a Phi Mu and she said they don’t do recs anymore. I can probably get recs for most houses if that actually matters.

Even the Old Row houses are now majority out of state girls. And no, they do not have their pledge classes already picked out. They definitely have a list of names they want, but there are always spots for girls they meet during rush. I was one of those girls. Came from out of state and only knew a Gamma Phi, a Zeta and a KD. I ended up in a different house from all of those, but it was an Old Row one.

I came from oos, didn’t know anyone in the state. Not a single other person from my high school went to Bama. I came on scholarship with a high gpa too. I kept old row houses on my schedule all the way through and preffed two of them that people on this site would have said I had no chance with. Just keep an open mind. Also, remember that old row has to cut a lot early in the process and some of the people who come on here saying OR doesn’t take oos are looking for a reason that they didn’t keep those particular houses on their own schedule.

To the girl that had the questions - with your stats you will be just fine- and as long as you aren't super awkward with conversations - you will land in a great house.

OR is NOT a majority of OOS.

It absolutely is majority out of state. Most are from the South, but there are more girls in Old Row from TX, AR, MS, TN, GA, KY, SC, Fl, NC and VA than there are from Alabama. I’m in an Old Row house and I promise you it’s true.

Don’t assume you can’t get OR. I’m OOS and had no connections. I had a 4.5+ GPA and high test scores, good involvement. I got back my top list for every round. I preffed my top 2 OR houses and absolutely love my house. my friend group is made up of almost all OOS girls.

I might be a little leery of KD and maybe Kappa, but most of the rest of OR has plenty of OOS girls.

I am an active from OOS. High GPA and was very involved in H.S. Had a full card after the 1st of cuts (12 houses). Fell in love with two of the houses- had amazing conversations and spoke to the President of the house of my fav house. Was cut from both (was super sad but again had a full card for the next round). Met many amazing girls and quite honestly, liked all of the houses. Loved both that I preffed. It was a toss up how to rank. I ended up OR - but I am going to be honest after two years in this house. I think I would have been in the other. I love my sisters, but the rules (very conservative) are exhausting. I wish I was more true to myself and it would have worked out better for me in the end.

Not saying which year but I am OOS I preffed at DG and AXO. I ended up at AXO and I have had a good experience overall, but to be 100% honest it's pretty conservative and image conscious...and I feel like DG may have allowed me to be myself a little more. Can't go back in time but it's something I think about.

If you find your people you will be happy in any house here but, it will probably be harder to get a leadership position in an OR house as compared to a NR house if your interested in that kind of role.

Every single OR house has more OOS than in-state members. Maybe it doesn't seem that way because they have to make huge cuts especially early in rush. They cut in-state too.

They do take the top in-state in-state PNMs because the OR houses know who they want and in-state PNMs know where top girls pledge. It's that way on every campus.

There are plenty of great in-state girls all over NR. Just go through with an open mind wherever you are from.

I'm in an OR houses that starts with a "K". I'm from Florida. There are events I am not I invited to - only for in state girls - a majority of the house. I am still having fun. I hang pretty much with the other OOS girls.

^^^ @Correction is lying. Neither Kappa nor KD have “in-state only” parties. No house does. That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.

Every Old Row house has more out of state girls than in state. If any house tried to have an “in-state only party” the rest of the house would revolt. It just wouldn’t happen. The girls in those houses are all friends and wouldn’t even think of doing something like that.

Bye troll!

Well, you must go here, because there IS a house that has two events a year for the "local" girls. It IS a thing. Don't try to cover this up Mama.

I'm OOR. Got a bid from KKG. Was treated like an outsider and not invited to many unofficial gatherings. I made 4 other friends in the house that also were OOR and felt like outsiders too. Most of my new member class knew each other already or knew Actives already and cliques formed very, very quickly. I dropped before initiation and so did 3 of my other OOR friends. Don't believe the garbage on here about OR welcoming OOR with open arms. KKG does not.

Recs are SUPER important to Old Row houses (minus Phi Mu). But even PM will take an email or word-of-mouth rec from an alum. It’s their nationals that did away with them.

If you don’t have two recs to every Old Row house you will be dropped by them all pbefore Sisterhood. Trust me!

It’s easy to find recs though. Ask your teachers, neighbors, parents’ friends, friends’ parents, the family you babysit for, etc.

My experience says the Rec letter need is NOT true.

OR takes out of state girls from SOUTHERN states. They don’t want too many girls that are outside their norm.

There is a nickname used that some OR houses use for new members that received bids just because they needed to meet quota, like “filler girl” and “ninja” (KKG, KD, and other OR houses use these terms). Your experience can be miserable in these houses.

You will go through recruitment and know almost immediately which houses you’d fit in more than others. Find your people. You’ll discover there are so many great houses here and not just the 5 that are always mentioned on GR.

By: OR
by: Troll

This is totally wrong and PNM's will figure this out during rush when they meet girls in these houses from all over the country. I'm in one of these houses, have been there for a year, and I have never heard anyone say Ninja or filler girl. Maybe that was a thing 20 years ago or something.

This is very true - houses that mainly have regional girls do this. Also, during recruitment, they use what OOS girls they have to meet the pnm's.

At the end of the day, do you want to join a chapter where they are thrilled to see you on bid day, or a chapter that took you because you will help maintain their high GPA? If you had a weighted 4.6, every chapter should be thrilled with that… so look for the ones that appreciate your personality. The person who takes you through pref could likely wind up being your Big. If they just pair you with someone who is blah and you don’t mesh, consider that a sign that they aren’t putting a lot of thought into you.

By: Truth
by: Roll Tide!

Nothing really matters until you getnto pref. Look at the other pnm's around you - that will be the group you will be surrounded by, not the older girls. I couldn't even tell you which girls from my house I spoke to during recruitment. Each house will have their "top" girls talking to you during recruitment.

What makes people think that choosing small town Bama girls makes a sorority EXCLUSIVE? Random! Big city, Big money, sophisticated , beautiful, savvy OOR is better!
