Alpha Phi Reputation
by: Alpha PhiI’m a PNM for fall rush and i’ve heard a lot about Aphi having a bed rep. What exactly is their reputation? Any specifics?

Alpha Phi had almost 200 new members last fall compared to most chapters taking around 130. They had to because they lost a lot of members the year before. They have good advisors and their nationals are committed to this chapter, so they are rebuilding but the thing is this has happened to them before. The way they score pnms is based a lot on looks, which has been shared by past members they aren’t happy about this- but if you want a looks house this is what they’re known for. If you are pretty, social, like to have fun and not super academic, this might be a top chapter for you.

Known a lot for their looks, have a reputation for partying alot / being popular with frat guys (iykwim). Definitely pretty accurate but based on what my friends in aphi have told me, they’re happy there and wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. As another poster said, they have strong support from their nationals, and are a top house at a lot of bigger schools (not at other SEC schools). My friends have told me their exec has been working with them to improve their reputation- trying to get them more involved on campus, heavily encouraging community service, and doing whatever they can to help their members improve their grades. Honestly no chapter on campus is perfect, but alpha phi in particular gets an excessive amount of hate.

i don’t think they have a bad reputation lol. they literally swap with all the top frats and are particularly loved by/close with pi kapp/pike/theta chi/sigma chi…the top new row frats and actually have old row frats participate in their events. their “bad rep” and “hate” comes from other girls and this site which i don’t think they care about. they’re on par with zeta socially.

Hi OP! Firstly I want to say that you shouldn’t let what other people say stop you from joining a house when you love it or convince you not to join a house when your heart is not in it. I also want to say that no matter what you read on this post, I can almost guarantee you will have a different experience, good or bad because sorority recruitment is different for everyone. That being said, I did not like Alpha Phi when I went through and tried to drop them every single round. They had dirty rushed me in the spring and the summer before recruitment. They were extremely nice, but I just didn’t connect to the girls there. As for the stereotype that they only go for pretty girls? I do not match the looks of the average APhi in the slightest. I am not skinny, I am not blonde, I am not conventionally attractive. To me, this really can mean either two things: they are not as superficial as they seem (possible) or they wanted me as a GPA boost (this is what I think happened). The latter is the most likely scenario IMO, just because I had a good GPA coming out of high school and I did pretty poorly in every round (not on purpose, again I tried to like it I just didn’t mesh well with the girls I talked to). I have met many Alpha Phis in my classes and know a couple from my hometown and they seem to really love it. They are all pretty and they are all very nice girls. They have had some controversies in the past, all having to do with racism. I would be lying if I said the incident from 2018 was not one of the reasons I wasn’t sure about their chapter. It was a factor in my decision. Just take everything the chapter is in consideration against your own values, as you should be doing for other houses too. You’ll find the right house for you, whether it’s APhi or not.

I agree with everything said above BUT "they have good advisors" I think most of the actives who have had to deal with their current advisors would disagree. I have many friends in APhi who are absolutely wonderful, but they have nothing nice to say about their advisors.
