Alpha Phi Reputation

by: Alpha Phi

I’m a PNM for fall rush and i’ve heard a lot about Aphi having a bed rep. What exactly is their reputation? Any specifics?

Alpha Phi had almost 200 new members last fall compared to most chapters taking around 130. They had to because they lost a lot of members the year before. They have good advisors and their nationals are committed to this chapter, so they are rebuilding but the thing is this has happened to them before. The way they score pnms is based a lot on looks, which has been shared by past members they aren’t happy about this- but if you want a looks house this is what they’re known for. If you are pretty, social, like to have fun and not super academic, this might be a top chapter for you.

I agree with everything said above BUT "they have good advisors" I think most of the actives who have had to deal with their current advisors would disagree. I have many friends in APhi who are absolutely wonderful, but they have nothing nice to say about their advisors.

They take girls who were cut for grades and reputation from old row and zeta, Pi Phi, ADPi, etc. They don’t have a very classy reputation on campus.

This is just based on girls in my dorm when I rushed but the girls who preffed aphi didn't pref piphi or adpi. Mostly aphi and zeta, and a few were aphi and pm. One preffed aphi and kappa, and surprisingly one girl preffed aphi and agd.

don’t know any aphi who went to pref or was interested in adpi. aphi and pi phi / zeta / phi mu / dz / gphi is what you’ll usually see.

Known a lot for their looks, have a reputation for partying alot / being popular with frat guys (iykwim). Definitely pretty accurate but based on what my friends in aphi have told me, they’re happy there and wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. As another poster said, they have strong support from their nationals, and are a top house at a lot of bigger schools (not at other SEC schools). My friends have told me their exec has been working with them to improve their reputation- trying to get them more involved on campus, heavily encouraging community service, and doing whatever they can to help their members improve their grades. Honestly no chapter on campus is perfect, but alpha phi in particular gets an excessive amount of hate.

Alpha Phi is awful all across the SEC. Maybe they have a few good chapters out west, but in the South they are bottom of bottom.

Agree with a lot of @lmo’s post but will add to @SEC’s that to be fair most of their chapters across the SEC are the newest house to each campus and we all know the newest house is usually bottom by default anyway. Not always fair - just the way it works. I don’t know many NPC groups that could expand as quickly as they did - with housing - like Alpha Phi did in the SEC. I think they came here first and then LSU, Ole Miss, UGA, Florida? I’m probably leaving some out or have the order mixed up but still. I’d say that means they have more than just a few top chapters in other parts of the country - they are probably in the top 5 nationally as far as size and resources tbh. I get cutting membership standards a little bit maybe as a strategy in the beginning on your new campuses to get established but here it seems they always have some “scandal” that keeps them from getting any real, lasting momentum. They need strong leadership to turn things around so they can start recruiting based on more than just appearance. But I also agree they get way too much hate on this site - and some of the comments here push things too far. What happens when recruitment gets close I guess.

i don’t think they have a bad reputation lol. they literally swap with all the top frats and are particularly loved by/close with pi kapp/pike/theta chi/sigma chi…the top new row frats and actually have old row frats participate in their events. their “bad rep” and “hate” comes from other girls and this site which i don’t think they care about. they’re on par with zeta socially.

Adding that their main philanthropy event is heartthrob week which snu, phi gam, theta chi, pike, sigma chi, and most of the other fraternities participate in

No one is actually very negative about what house you’re in on campus, I see girls in zeta/ pm bring their aphi friends to their date parties and vice versa, everyone has friends in other houses. People care how you act as an individual, not your letters. This goes for all houses.

They are just known for being party girls and mostly have girls from out west and up north. Of course, those traits don’t fly at Alabama. It’s good they’re there for girls like that though. They are just the antithesis of southern belles.

Aphi has questionable recruiting practices on a national level. Check out Snapped the Podcast 😧

Hi OP! Firstly I want to say that you shouldn’t let what other people say stop you from joining a house when you love it or convince you not to join a house when your heart is not in it. I also want to say that no matter what you read on this post, I can almost guarantee you will have a different experience, good or bad because sorority recruitment is different for everyone. That being said, I did not like Alpha Phi when I went through and tried to drop them every single round. They had dirty rushed me in the spring and the summer before recruitment. They were extremely nice, but I just didn’t connect to the girls there. As for the stereotype that they only go for pretty girls? I do not match the looks of the average APhi in the slightest. I am not skinny, I am not blonde, I am not conventionally attractive. To me, this really can mean either two things: they are not as superficial as they seem (possible) or they wanted me as a GPA boost (this is what I think happened). The latter is the most likely scenario IMO, just because I had a good GPA coming out of high school and I did pretty poorly in every round (not on purpose, again I tried to like it I just didn’t mesh well with the girls I talked to). I have met many Alpha Phis in my classes and know a couple from my hometown and they seem to really love it. They are all pretty and they are all very nice girls. They have had some controversies in the past, all having to do with racism. I would be lying if I said the incident from 2018 was not one of the reasons I wasn’t sure about their chapter. It was a factor in my decision. Just take everything the chapter is in consideration against your own values, as you should be doing for other houses too. You’ll find the right house for you, whether it’s APhi or not.
