Truth about being in a bottom house

by:

I am in a house that is considered to be in the "bottom tier" here at Alabama. This house was honestly my favorite house since day one. I felt so comfortable talking to the girls during recruitment.

Now for some of the truth.... Most of my sisters, including myself, are more introverted than extroverted. We are not the kind of girls you will always see at parties. This is one of the reasons I love my sorority. Being so introverted it would have been hard to reach out more my freshman year and meet as many girls as I have.

Most of my sisters don't get invited to a lot of fraternity events and those who do have to be with a lot of girls from other chapters. I went to one where almost everyone there was from a certain chapter and were all hanging out. There was another girl from my house and we tried to be close to one another, but it felt uncomfortable honestly.

We do not patriciate in as many events as other chapters or have as many girls there. I have gone to events where there are tons of girls from certain chapters and we only have a few and sometimes I feel guilty about it.

We honestly don't have the best sisterhood. This is just my speculation on this... since a lot of us are introverted we have not been able to form such meaningful relationships in the past. So, when we finally have that kind of relationship we feel really betrayed when someone has let us down like not invited us to something. When an LC comes from headquarters we receive a review of 3 things we do well as a chapter and 3 things we need to work on. One of the three we need to work on has always been sisterhood.

I also think our sisterhood needs work because we really only have small groups of friends. We enjoy each others' company but tend to hang out with smaller groups of 3-5 girls. Once these friendships have formed it is really hard to get into one.

You won't see us getting up and screaming and jumping around for our chapter like other sororities do. I think it is part of our personality. It's not that we don't love our chapter, it's just that we express it in a different way.

Although a lot of people say that it doesn't matter which house you're in and people don't care, but this is not always the case. Sometimes people's ego gets the better of them and they feel better than you because they are in a higher tiered house or fraternity boys don't want to hang out with you because of this. This is absolutely not the case for everyone, most people don't care, but there will be those who do and will try to bring you down.

Honestly, my ego gets the better of me too. When I see girls in other letters of houses that dropped me I get jealous. I had a good GPA and felt like I had a good conversation with these girls, but they didn't feel the same way. I sometimes feel lesser because I am in a lower house and I know I shouldn't.

There are pros and cons to every house. This is just my point of view. Anyone is welcome to agree or disagree, add something or express how they feel in another way. These are just some feelings I have experienced during my time here in my chapter.

Again, I love my house and if you are in or end up in a "bottom house" you will still have a great time at Alabama! Make sure you are true to yourself, even if people say negative things about a sorority you love during recruitment. Best of luck to you all!

Thank you for your honesty. There are a lot of more introverted girls that aren’t interested in the huge parties and busy social calendar. It’s nice to see there are houses where those girls might feel more comfortable.

This whole post is a bit suspicious. New Row, Old Row or “tier” doesn’t matter. No proud Greek member would write like that.
