sororities & trans people

by: fyi

not that this applies to grant or every chapter at ua but if anyone was curious about this like I was here’s the tea

- Delta Phi Epsilon: explicitly open to trans and non binary women

- Zeta: says that the individual must consistently identify and live as a woman

- Sororities open to any individual who identifies as a woman: Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Epsilon Phi, Alpha Sigma Tau, Chi Omega, Delta Gamma, Gamma Phi Beta,Kappa Alpha Theta, Kappa Delta, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Phi Sigma Sigma, Sigma Sigma Sigma, and Theta Phi Alpha

- Sororities open to any individual who identifies and lives as a woman: Alpha Gamma Delta, Alpha Omicron Pi, Alpha Xi Delta, Delta Delta Delta, Pi Beta Phi, Sigma Delta Tau, and Sigma Kappa

Obviously it’s up to the chapters at the end of the day but technically most sororities are open to trans women at the national level for future pnms

I bet Alpha Phi is all about this. They’ve had multiple scandals and need some good PR. They’ll give Grant a bid.

Yeah they were supposed to be open to black women too but it took national media coverage for the sororities HERE to extend bids to them. And that was less than 10 years ago…

It wasn't the media coverage that made it happen. It had been an ongoing war for a while between chapter actives wanting it and ready to do so, and old guard alumnae leadership who supported it in theory but were too afraid to be the first chapter to do it. It finally happened when a deal was made among all the panhellenic sororities and approved by young and old that a second formal rush, one time only, was held specifically for WOC. There were not that many, but several of them accepted bids and that's how it happened. Was there media coverage? Yes, mostly when that second rush was happening, but that wasn't the concern so much as what the actives were saying and doing to buck their leadership, which was a huge deal.

Well it broke the ice and got everyone to come together to finally let it happen. It actually was the best solution for that one time because the houses could offer as many bids as they wanted with no quota cap like in formal rush. Something had to change and that's how it did. It worked. But some people are going to keep criticising no matter what. Whatever.
