Explain it to me $$$
by: ??How do college girls afford up to 8 grand a year on sororities? Are girls taking out loans? Before anyone says old money, there are old money families but a lot of that money dried up decades ago. I mean, its Alabama, you could get a gorgeous mansion in Selma for 75 thousand. How is this done without sending your parents into debt? I am not trying to be mean, I just really want to know.

A lot of girls in my sorority are on full rides/ close to full rides. So like I get a refund bc my scholarship amount exceeds cost of attendance and I use that/ my parents pay for the rest of my dues since they aren’t paying for the actual school which I’m super grateful for

Most everyone has the parents/scholarships pay for the majority of it. Some girls are very well off, other aren't but make it work. I knew the exact dollar amount I had to work with for all 4 years of college. (one of four daughters). It's a huge reason why I chose Alabama. I lived in one of the cheaper dorms freshman year and lived in one of the cheapest apartments for 2 year and then found a cheap studio for my senior year. Also I had a nice but older car. Literally no one ever judged me for where I lived and what I drove. They covered all my major expenses like rent, phone, insurance and dues. I worked during the summer, on breaks and a few random weekends a semester and had more than enough for everything extra. It's very doable but always had to keep a budget in mind.

I mean, a lot of private colleges are up to $80k or more per year these days, and there are plenty of families that are full pay for those...even if you're out of state at Bama with not a lick of scholarship money (pretty rare) it's still "only" $50k...I do get scholarships which bring my cost down to roughly what in-state would be at a school in my home state (NC) but even if I didn't Bama tuition + sorority stuff would still be a downright bargain compared to what my parents pay for my brother to go to Tulane

Academic scholarships are a major part of why I came here. If you have the presidential scholarship, work at least 50 hours a week in the summer, and work weekends in school, you’ll likely be able to afford tuition without student loans. But if your parents saved up for college, some of that can be used for living expenses and greek life.
I even have a Resident Advisor friend who is in a sorority and she gets to live in a dorm and eat at the dining halls for free.
