Social life in a guy in bama.Fraternity is necessary?

Is being in a new row/old row fraternity pretty much necessary to have a good social life here in bama as a guy (that isn't a student athlete)?
This is what my friend at Bama tells me who is in an IFC fraternity here.
Being in a IFC fraternity with a decent reputation in Bama is one of the only way to make good male friends and meet good looking girls (most of whom are in sororities or used to be in sororities) as a guy in Bama.
if youre a regular geed (no matter how handsome you are) or in some irrelevant organization youll get stuck with weird people and most geed parties are sausage fests with no good looking girls and if there are girls its usually chubby weird girls.
Exception to this is bama student athletes like football players and they have pretty good social lives and social status on campus from what i heard.

It dominates the first two years. Once people grow up a bit and the bars open up to you it isn’t as important. You’ll definitely feel left out freshman year if you like to party. One of my best friends wasn’t in a frat at all and he had a great college experience. He had friends in every frat and went to any party he wanted. I do think it was hard for him when we were doing freshman swaps and stuff to sit in the dorms. Or when we all had a date party coming up.

Go rush a fraternity. It's worth it if you can pay the dues. Sure, people aren't active in greek life after the first two years but they are still in closed off cliques that they meet in greek life even after the first two years and they go with their group of friends to the bars in their third and fourth years.

Unless stuff changed you can get into the band parties if you are tight with actives. I was a pike and let my buddy in all the time. He got me into Snu, Sae and KA through his Birmingham friends all the time.
