Strategies for Low GPA pnms
by: Strategies
If you have a lower gpa, not as many connections (coming from far away) or any other kind of challenging situation coming into recruitment- this is for you. If you have a perfect GPA and are an Alabama beauty, you can stop reading! Thanks!
The way ranking works is it matches the ranking given to you by the chapters. When you have two low ranks, you have a “match” and you get invited back. The chapters have the upper hand all the way through recruitment and the pnm only really gets to choose at pref. What this means is that in the early rankings for philanthropy and sisterhood- a pnm can sometimes strategize by considering what chapters will want her the most- and rank those chapters at the top to help make sure she gets more invites back.
If there is a chapter that you know is probably not a fit or won’t ask you back- but say they’re the most popular chapter on campus and everyone else wants them… you can be strategic by ranking them at the bottom. Why? Because it bumps the other chapters up a little and gives you a better chance of getting houses that are interested in you a chance.
Chapters rank pnms before philanthropy based on who knows you, your grades and other attributes like leadership or talents. If you know that a chapter is likely to rank you lower, focus instead on the other chapters and rank them higher. Your higher ranking will help to get them to have you on their invite list for philanthropy. The chapters that are less popular are often great fits and are overlooked by a lot of middle pnms- but by ranking strategically, you have more invites and have more choices.
#1 by: How this works
Patty PNM ranks her houses the traditional way going into philanthropy, most popular to least popular. Because she puts the least popular chapters at the bottom- a couple of them are not on her invite list because they get cut. Patty is cut from several chapters for grades and a couple because she is coming from far away and they prefer in state girls. Patty only gets 3 houses back for philanthropy. She struggles to get through the week and ends up dropping altogether.
Now let’s say Patty does strategic ranking instead. She knows houses A and B are grades houses and she doesn’t make their cutoff. She knows houses K and L are mostly for instate girls and she doesn’t even have a letter of Rec for them. By putting these chapters at the bottom of her ranking, it bumps the other chapters up.
Patty now gets 6 chapters back for Philanthropy round. She finds that she likes 2 of them, 2 she doesn’t feel are a fit and the other 2 are just okay but she grows to like them more by the end of the week. Patty makes it through to pref round and gets a bid to one of the houses she initially didn’t like but by the end of the week she falls in love and finds her home.
#2 by: NO, THIS IS WRONG
Please don't tell pnm's this. It is WRONG and confusing and NOT the way it works! The algorithm will not drop houses from a pnm's schedule just because she ranks them low, and it will automatically do the bumping based on how many houses invite her back. The houses that are lowest in a pnm's rankings, are not automatically 'cut' from her schedule and she will get these houses back automatically if needed to fill her schedule, so 'strategic ranking' is not a thing.
The algorithm actually works like this:
When houses do not invite back a pnm, the first thing that happens is that they are removed from her list completely. It doesn't matter if she ranked them low or high, they are now gone. Then the algorithm considers all of the houses who do invite her back, whether they are on her 'cut' list or not, and gives her as many houses back as possible based on the allowed amount per round. Her rankings only come into play if more houses want to ask her back than are allowed for that round. In that case, the algorithm drops her lower ranked houses for her.
It is worth noting that the sororities have no idea how a pnm ranks them, so that is not a consideration ever.
Pnm's should not try to outsmart the algorithm with 'strategic ranking' because it won't work and she could screw herself over. Don't tell pnm's this BS.

Whoever this is posting about ranking strategically clearly doesn't understand the process. What they have described is nothing more than a pnm ranking herself through someone else's eyes. Please, for the love of god DO NOT DO THIS. Don't try to make the sororities' decisions for them, you can only decide for yourself. This is your only chance to have some kind of input into your rush so don't blow it on this person's misguided strategy.

The last important part of this strategy is for the chapters that you get invited to at Philanthropy and Sisterhood- if you like them and can see yourself in their house TELL THEM SO.
The middle tier and even lower tier chapters want to focus on the pnms that want them! If they know you are more interested in them, this will help them to pair you with someone in their house who has your interests and give you more attention. This will help you have more options through the week.
Keep an open mind and give each chapter a chance. Realize that less popular chapters mean more opportunity- for leadership and to be one of their strongest members. In the end, people only care about your letters for about 15 minutes after bid day and after that it is all about the friendships you make. Good luck.
