How many pref invites are typical?

by: Honestly

I'm just curious how many pref invites are typical? It seems like a ton of girls would have 1 or even 0.

Most pnm's get two, but not necessarily the two they were hoping for. Pnm's who don't want to give either house a chance end up dropping and that is what happens to the vast majority of the 7% who don't go to a house, they voluntarily drop. A good number of pnm's get only one for pref, but honestly that takes off the all pressure because you know if you go to that one and put it on your card, you are getting that bid, so that one invitation is as good as a bid; all it takes is one! And yes, a few pnm's end up getting dropped before pref but it is a few, not a ton. And those pnm's who were carried through that 3rd round and didn't get to a pref are the prime candidates for a COB if they will try to keep ties with sisters they connected with there and/or their fellow pnm friends who end up in that house.

Good explanation. But one other thing: The girls who did not get any pref invites are eligible for those mysterious "snap bids" (when a house doesn't fill their quota with their bid list). Controversial subject, and NOT something you can plan for or count on.

Any PNM is eligible for a snap bid if they don't sign a card, not just the ones who were left out of pref. And idk why you would call them "mysterious" unless you have no real first-hand sorority experience.

Well, Ms. Snark, I used the term "mysterious" because come bid day, this site will be flooded with girls wanting to know if they are going to get a snap bid to the houses that cut them earlier.
And yes, I totally understand how snap bids work, but the post I was responding to discussed girls who got NO pref invites (...and discussed COB, which we all knows come AFTER bids are signed). For anyone actually trying to understand the craziness, snap bids are given after the house recieves its bid acceptance list. Usually just recruitment chair and exec know who are the girls who get snaps. Again, this is something PNM's have no control over at all (versus COB recruitment, when they can choose who to contact, accept invites from, etc.)

It all really really depends on so many factors.
I had 4 for sisterhood. 2 I really liked and 2 I absolutely didn't want. I ended up with my 1st and 4th choices. I ended up being only listing my first choice. It worked out for me (thank God) but it was a huge gamble. I was SO SO nervous, waiting for the dredded call.
My cousin who went through the same year I did, didn't like either house she had. She dropped and COBed a house she liked from sisterhood.
My roommate only had one that she liked from beggining so it was such an easy day/night for her.
Another friend of mine didn't like the only house she had, stilled signed her card, dropped in 4 weeks and got into the house her friends were in a year later. She really regretted not dropping.
There are so many different outcomes.

What is a snap bid? I’m confused on the difference between that and COB.

Snap Bids are given out before Bid Day by houses that do not match to Quota. They go to a select few pnm's that either drop or were dropped, who the house likes well enough to offer a bid to reach Quota. Pnm's who are offered and accept a snap bid go to Bid Day and run home with everyone else. This is the only time Snaps are offered and no pnm should ever use the possibility of a snap as a rush strategy. Continuous Open Bidding, or COB, happens any time after Bid Day to allow houses whose memberships are under the House Total membership to reach whatever that number is as decided by Panhellenic each semester.

I had two for pref. Everyone I knew had two. I went into recruitment knowing nobody, therefore I didn't have any prejudices against any houses. I honestly loved most of the houses - everyone was so kind and welcoming. I had a really hard time ranking the houses. I had full cards each round, however, I was a little bummed getting dropped by two particular houses. In the end, it all worked out and was meant to be. I am very grateful I am not in either of those two houses, as I am out of state and want to not be left out of events because I didn't grow up in Mobile or MB. I am super happy with my house.
