Sorority Commitments
by: SeekinginfoI am a pnm '22 seeking info about the week to week activities, time commitments, and balancing course workload. I am interested in participating, but I would really like to know what is required and how much of a time investment I am looking at. Without disclosing too much information about myself I have chosen a rigorous major. I know many women have come before me and have done the same, but I am a bit nervous. I want to be a very active member when I pledge and become a sister, but I do wonder if I can balance everything. Can you all give me an idea of what a typical week is like when it comes to meetings, activities, and socials etc. What is mandatory and what is not? I would love to hear any thoughts, advice or experiences that may help me with this.

New members do wayyyyyyyyyy more stuff than active members. I’m in engineering for reference and non social things like chapter and service probably take 2 hours a week on average. I would honestly rush and just go a house with a solid gpa average (> 3.3). Older members can really help you with your classes

I’m a chemistry major. It’s going to take up time a lot of time first semester. My sorority required us to attend certain meetings, sisterhood events and parties. They also had required study hours at the house which I used for studying. In my house, you earn points for everything and you are required to maintain a certain number of points. The first semester is the hardest, by far. However, you have more free time in college than high school because you aren’t in class for 7 hours a day followed by sports practices, etc. so it’s very doable if you manage your time. I took early classes and studied during the day so my evenings were mostly free. I was really tired some mornings because parties happen in the middle of the week but its manageable.
The only time I almost lost my mind was during homecoming prep. The pomping requirements alone for pledges in my house was insane and the prep time happens during midterms. My house was ruthless about the requirements. I almost had a nervous breakdown… but I also met my boyfriend that week in a frat we were paired with.
Second semester has been much better!
I would highly recommend trying it. It’s so fun and I made a lot of friends.

Most sororities agree that school is super important so you aren’t required to go to everything however you’ll still have obligations like homecoming week you can’t get out of. Chapter is also something you’ll have to go to every week. You also will normally have a certain about if philanthropy activities you’ll have to go to each semester and a lot encourage you to go to other sororities/frats philanthropy events!
