Transferring & Friends

by:

I’m thinking about transfer in the fall and I’m currently in a sorority who will switch chapters. I know this sounds stupid but my concern is I won’t make friends. I’m a shy person and it was difficult for me to make friends last semester when I joined my chapter. I’m just scared that the same thing is going to happen. Did any transfers make friends right away?

Try reaching out to the chapter now! You can ask them about transferring/meeting girls and they will probably try to be accommodating!

Are you sure you will 'switch chapters'? There is not an automatic affiliation policy for many sororities. In many cases the chapter would need to meet you and decide to accept you as an affiliate. Not sure they're gonna do that if you're just 'thinking about' transferring and even then there is no guarantee they would see you as a good fit with them. Chapters choose their own members. You need to nail that down before you go any further in your thought process.

This is the most truthful answer. No need to thumbs down just because you don't want to hear it.

Just because you're an active member of your sorority's chapter at your school doesn't mean you'll automatically be an active member of Alabama's chapter.

In my house what happens is some exec members meet with the girl who is looking to transfer. Then in a meeting they talk about you to all members of my sorority, since it's usually only one transfer, we have way more time to talk about positives and negatives. Then we all vote. The vote has to be above a certain number for you to be offered membership.

Also, at least in my chapter, grades are a huge concern, if you don't have a really good GPA, you won't be invited to join our chapter and would have to just go alum.

Just things to think about before you just decide to transfer.

Think positive. You will have to reach out and go through the affiliation process. If it all works out for you and you are welcomed into your house on campus I do feel you will find "your" friends. You will be in a very large house filled with a variety of young women. You need to make an effort on your side, but in time I believe you will feel comfortable. Just remember it is a process and nothing happens immediately.

I agree it's important to think positive, but it's also important to understand that you may not e extended an invitation to join the chapter. Just think of both senarios so you're not crushed if they did not extend you an invitation.

Thank you everyone for the sweet and truthful responses. I now have a clearer understanding on how the process works. Thank you!
