If you’re coming from the north or anywhere else outside the South and don’t have any connections, you’ll end up in houses like this. There is nothing wrong with that. It’s just how it is. There have been thousands before you and there will be thousands after.

By: UA
by: Um.....

This is not true. 70 percent of the students at UA are from out of state. There are tons of out of state girls in all sororities. If you are from out of state, avoid KD and Kappa. They are like being in high school and leave out girls from events that are from out of state.

Right, lots of OOS, but the states with the highest enrollment are still Georgia/Texas/Tennessee/Florida and Illinois. It’s not as if it goes from Alabama straight to Jersey.

Yes GPhi and APhi in particular have a majority of northeastern/Chicago area/west coast members.

If you are a Northern or East Coast girl, ignore all the rankings you see on this site. You won’t like the traditionally Southern houses when you visit them because they are filled with Southern girls who know each other from high school, Bible camp, etc. and their values, sense of style, and goals will be drastically different than your own.

Southern girls are struggling with the fact that, with so many non-Southern girls now going though recruitment, the concept of Old Row isn’t what it used to be and most out of state girls are not impressed by the houses that are allegedly ranked at the top and are much happier in New Row houses. There is a desperation to keep Old Row at the top of the ranks for reasons unknown to any non-Southern girl. The demographic of the school is changing and Old Row isn’t going down without a fight.

Also, don’t be fooled by all the houses stating that they have out of state girls in every pledge class. They are talking about girls from Southern states like Georgia, Mississippi, etc. They aren’t referring to Illinois, NY, Connecticut, etc. If you are from a non-Southern state and land in one of the “top” Old Row houses, you will be deemed a “filler” girl which is basically an outcast that was offered a bid to fill the class or show geographic diversity. You will be miserable because there will be all kinds of social events that you won’t know about because you won’t be invited. A lot of non-Southern girls drop from those houses because being treated like an outcast in a “top” house isn’t fun.

I honestly don’t understand why people don’t talk about this more.

as someone from the north i was actually more inclined to join a more southern sorority - it’s really why i came to bama in the first place. maybe i’m just different than the majority of people, but i like southern culture a lot. it’s sad that the exclusion happens.

this!! When I rushed as an oos, I honestly hated the OR houses. just a different culture. I felt so at home at a "bottom" house because it was mostly northern girls I could relate to. Don't let ranks made by OR moms/actives influence you. Every house besides SK and SDT are good.

Genuinely curious - what exactly are Southern “values, sense of style and goals” as compared to those of the North?

EVERY house has cliques and divides with how many girls there are. Gphi for instance may not have the southern/northern divide in their house, but they certainly have a divide between the cool Jersey girls and more studious northern girls, which is why the cool girls end up dropping. The more studious ones always take the exec positions and run the house, are judgmental, strict, etc. Sort of like the southern girls run the OR houses exec.

In my opinion, these southern "values" are full of judgmental women. If you don't fit their mold, they don't like you. You want to be surrounded by women that accept you for "you." Not where you went to high school, not be your sense of style, not by what state you are from.

@Curious, unless you are new to this country, you certainly understand that there is a difference in culture, style, etc. between a girl that was raised in New York City vs. one that was raised in Birmingham. The same things won’t appeal to these two girls. However, this site makes PNM’s believe that if you don’t subscribe to the superiority of the traditionally Southern houses, something is wrong with you. The ranks are garbage unless you are a Southern girl looking to get a bid from a traditionally Southern house. Of course there is “diversity” (and I use that word very loosely) among pledges classes of 150 girls but I’d be careful about being from Chicago and thinking KKG or KD, for example only, will be a good place for you based on the alleged ranks on this site.

Finally, some truth on Greek rank. As a previous filler girl at a top house, I got into the house and was miserable. I bought into all of these ranks and what other PNMs were telling me and didn’t rank houses that I probably would have been happy in. Instead, I got a bid from a top house and was ignored. The other girls in my pledge class all knew each other and several of us that didn’t have contacts were treated like we didn’t exist. There was no bullying or anything like that but it was if we weren’t there. Social events hosted at active apartments and tailgates occurred that we weren’t invited to and nobody made any effort to try to include us. I, with 5 other girls, dropped before initiation. I intended to do informal recruitment second semester but by that time, I didn’t see the point. I’ve made a ton of friends outside of the Greek system. However, a part of me will always feel like I missed something good about this campus had I just ignored all the rankings and originally joined a house that made me feel comfortable even if they were a “bottom” house. With over 2000 girls going though recruitment, no house is desperate for members. It’s all so dumb and this site highlights the worst aspects of it all. Good luck to all the girls going through all of this next year. It’s not fun.

I went thru recruitment knowing no one. It was pretty stressful. I loved Kappa and DDD...but was dropped prior to pref. I am so grateful in the end that I didn't get Kappa as some of my Kappa friends are excluded from events...local girls only. Sad.

This happens in non southern houses too though, if you don’t end up in the cool/popular group. I guess you at least have a chance but friend groups still form really fast in NR houses. Definitely a “grass is always greener” situation.

I’d agree with the above but I’d also consider Theta. They really care about their grades and my suitemate and her pledge sisters are super close and having a great time. I’m in a different house but I liked them a lot during recruitment. They get a bad rap but their pledge class last year was pretty good. Maybe they just have to overcome their past reputation as a new chapter before they built their new house. Not sure why they are still ranked as a bottom... My suitemate is from NJ and her close friends are from Chicago, Seattle (I think), and Texas (I think).

by: X

Phi Mu is a traditional Southern girl house. I’d include KKG, KD, and XO in that category. They are really difficult houses for Northern girls to get bids because all the Southern girls want these houses. You’d need to have a lot of contacts and connections with girls in the house. If you get a bid, there is a risk of being an outsider.
DDD has also been in this category but I’m not really sure where they stand now.

Phi Mu has girls from all over, just like all the houses. While connections help with houses that have strong return rates, it has absolutely nothing to do with if you are from the north, east, west, or south. Houses look at grades, conversations, involvement, and how put together you look with clothes, hair and stuff. Even the houses that get slammed for being “Alabama” houses do this. Put your best self forward, be open to all when you meet the girls, and good luck!

Mary, I don’t know how long ago you went through recruitment but let’s be real. No matter how cute, smart, and well spoken a non-Southern girl is at parties, the odds are really against her in getting a bid from a traditional, Old Row houses. Those houses are filled with girls that are all from the same zip codes and know each other prior to recruitment. And, they don’t really want ti change and that’s ok. Honestly, if you are from Chicago, expect to get dropped by KD, KKG, XO, PM, and likely DDD and AXO. It has nothing to do with how cute or smart you are or how good your conversation was at a party and everything to do with what high school you attended and how many actives you already know. Don’t beat yourself up about that, they aren’t your people…but also, don’t believe the hype that they are top houses. They are top houses for Southern girls.

Another thing that nobody talks about during recruitment is that it is all calculated. Houses knows the top girls they are interested in and will make sure those girls are given a lot of attention during the parties and that may change as the week progresses.

How do you know if the house really likes you? If you are introduced to an officer of the house, that is a good sign. If they bring you to a seat in the center of the room (like a sofa in the center of their living room), that is a good sign (rather than on the floor against the wall in the back). If you meet a lot of girls, that’s a good sign. It’s all orchestrated and I’d pref the houses that are treating you well.

There is absolutely no difference in the Greek experience if you are in Old Row v. New Row. I’m in a New Row house and we have swaps with frats, formals, tailgates, etc. just like Old Row. I’ve attended frat formals every year. I have never once attended a frat party or met a frat guy that cared about my letters. A couple of times Old Row girls have gasped in surprise when I’ve told them my house because I wasn’t a troll like they expected but, honestly, that idiotic reaction is pretty rare too.

If you get a bid from any house that makes you feel like home, you’re going to make lifelong friends and have a great time. The key is try not to pretend you are something that you are not because of some stupid rank because it’s those girls that need up in a house they hate…and that happens in every single house in this campus.

Active spitt’n facts. The OR houses likely have about 10 girls from OOR in their pledge classes of 150 girls. And, odds are those 10 girls aren’t really included and if they drop, nobody in the house cares.

saw a reply abt phi mu and oos- they treat their fillers like crap. they're the same as kappa and kd, just nobody talks about it and they're good at covering it up and girls are afraid of dropping because they have the "top house status" and don't want to lose that, even though they are treated like crap.

my best friend got a bid from phi mu as oor and was miserable. ended up dropping before initiation and was completely slandered by her former "sisters" who made it out like she was the problem and not them. so sick of seeing people idolize and act like phi mu is so amazing. some of the biggest bullies on the row

If you’re rushing as a sophomore, does where you’re originally from mean you’ll be a filler girl if you’ve met actives already?

By: 2025
by: Relax

If you already have a group of friends in a house and that house gives you a bid, you won’t experience the isolation that some OOR girls face in certain houses because you already have your friend group. I would not worry about that after you get a bid. You will be fine and happy.

However, don’t go through recruitment thinking you’ll for sure get a bid from the house you have friends in. You may or may not. I’d keep an open mind about that during recruitment. Houses have 400ish members and knowing 5-6 actives will help you but will not guarantee you party invites or a bid unless the actives you know are officers or head of recruitment where their opinions hold more weight. I think there were 2,300 or some girls that went through Recruitment last year so it’s a tough numbers game. Campus enrollment is increasing so recruitment numbers have followed that trend up.

Going through recruitment as a sophomore is also a little more difficult. Houses prefer freshman because they will be a part of their house for the maximum amount of time. However, every house extends bids to some sophomores so don’t lose sleep over that.

Several girls go through recruitment thinking they only want 1-2 houses and the others will suck. That’s dangerous thinking and those are the girls that are literally crying on the street when they get their party invites and get cut from those 1-2 houses. Its pretty pathetic because I’m not sure how any girl can think she’s too good for any house on this campus.

Keep an open mind. Go back to where you are most comfortable and you will be fine.

As already stated above, there is no need to feel bad about yourself if you get cut from the Old Row houses- there are a lot of factors in play that are way beyond your control and it is not a sign that you aren’t pretty, smart or good enough. All the houses on this campus provide a much better Greek experience than any house on any other campus. Despite the horrible comments on this site, none of them suck. Bama is the gold standard for Greek life and all houses share in that.

From what I can tell based on my friends and dorm, if you are OOR and care about partying, your best choices are Zeta (seems to be the biggest party house on campus along with KKG), Aphi, GPhi, DZ

If you are a OOR girl and care more about sisterhood and grades, your best choices are Pi Phi, DG, Theta

All sororities party so it just depends on where that falls on their list of priorities. Also, every house has hot girls and not so hot girls so it is hard to judge on that alone but some houses care much more about that than others. I’d say Zeta really cares about that a lot. OR hates Zeta and ignores the rest of the NR houses (I think the word they use is irrelevant) other than Aphi for obvious reasons.

Houses that take a lot of Northern girls: Zeta, Aphi, Pi Phi, DG, Theta, Gamma Phi, DZ, Aopi, SK. If you OOR, you’ll end up in one of these houses.

Houses that take very few Northern girls: AGD (but only the really smart ones), Adpi, AXO (I think but I’m not sure), DDD

Houses that take almost no Northern girls if they can avoid it: KKG, KD, XO, PM

These are all great houses. Incoming class needs to not stress about all of this. Just clean up your social media, work on your social resume and video.
