sigma kappa
by: QuestionIs it true Sigma Kappa may be colonizing? And does anyone know how soon? I'm not greek now but am a Sigma Kappa legacy so I would really be interested in pledging them. And is it really that "bad" to pledge a "new" sorority? Looking at how well APhi and DG have done with colonizing, would it really be that big of a deal?

not sure if it is Sigma Kappa. I've heard that Tri Sigma has been trying to colonize here for a long time, but I think Sigma Kappa would have an edge because of their previous presence and chapters already present in the state. Actually, I think it's more admirable to be in a colonizing class than a regular one. Being in the colonizing class allows you to create your own tradition and legacy for the chapter at your university. Not a lot of people like new houses here; the new houses, both fraternities and sororities, are looked down upon and are ostracized by the rest of the Greek community. However, some of the new houses are doing rather well for being here for only a few years. I would try and see if Sigma Kappa is coming; two new sororities are slated to be here in the future.

UA is open for colonization, but with recent events (ie the whole segregation issue), I believe most groups not on campus would not look well upon coming to a campus where not only will they have to pour in millions of dollars but also possibly not thrive because of everything that has happened. I think the University's main concern is to revamp Sigma Delta Tau, which has a long history at the Capstone. I think the plan is to try to have them doing formal recruitment in the next few years.

First, SDT has a long history at the university - it is a single letter chapter. SDT does not feel they have to compete one-on-one with the other sororities. They do not mind continuing to be a "niche" that is different, and that is different in a good way. With most other groups building new houses, it is entirely possible for SDT to occupy, in a couple of years, a vacated house on the row. We hope they do! We've missed having them on the row.

Sigma Kappa - the reason they left UA, I was told by a member, was an internal split. It had nothing to do with how they were perceived or treated here. So they would be the group more likely to colonize.
BUT - don't wait around on them. With all the construction and houses moving in and out, it will be at least 2 years before anything happens.
Of the other NPC sororities, Sigma Sigma Sigma would be the most likely. They have enough chapters (although few in Southern states) but they have been colonizing at a brisk pace in the South. OTOH, there are very few Tri-Sig alums who could help.
Other NPC groups, like Theta Phi Alpha and Alpha Sigma Tau, are too small and have too few alumnae.
Caveat - this is all my opinion.

No one is greek at UA that has been commenting on this thread. In order for them to come on campus (whether it's sigma kappa, azd, or tri sig), we as chapter members of current houses have to vote on whether or not we want them to colonize. Then it's at least a full academic year before Panhellenic brings them on campus. There will not be a new chapter coming to campus this next formal recruitment or academic year since this has not been something Panhellenic came to the chapters with last year.

I am attending the alumni reception at University of Alabama for Sigma Kappa this Monday. Yes, we are in the beginning the process of re-colonizing. This chapter will have LOTS of support and as a legacy you will be part of the colony class that decides how good this chapter will be!

how can sigma delta tau possibly do formal recruitment with no house on the row and 38 members total. they should have left campus years ago and then recolonized. they cant compete with houses with 300+ girls. THEY HAVE 38 MEMBERS ITS JUST NOT POSSIBLE
