Cob vs fall rush
by: OnIs it worth it to join a sorority through cob or is it better to just wait until formal rush? Will my experience as a pnm be different in the spring?

COB is way less formal. You have a choice to what houses you visit (the ones that are doing COB) and it's easier to tell if a house is a good fit for you. Formal rush is so hectic. The COB route is stress free. Go for it! Just because certain houses do COB doesn't mean there is something wrong with them. They are just filling available spots from graduating seniors or girls who have left for whatever reason.

Thanks for the insight, I appreciate it so much!! I’m a bit concerned that not many sororities offer cob so I might not get a chance to join the sorority that I’m the best fit with/ the sororities who offer cob are “undesirable” (especially after reading some of the harsher tier lists on here) so could anyone who knows which sororities are eligible let me know?

My honest opinion about COBs is they just feel uncomfortable. Houses usually don't have a ton of spots open and in my experience way more girls come than we are able to extend bids to so we have to call girls and tell them they were not extended bids, which is uncomfortable for us and may be disappointing to them. I personally would not call COBs stress free, especially if you really want a certain house. Just my opinion.

No, nothing like. New members are certainly welcomed into their new houses, but COB is not a panhellenic thing so each sorority offers their own bids whenever, and you just get one when it's offered and if you accept they'll tell you when the new member event is. And there aren't ever that many new members in spring compared to fall.

You will never know all the sororities offering bids outside of formal. They don't have to announce that they will be filling spots (doing COB), so often they will just offer the few bids they have on the dl to select girls they already know. Your best chance outside of formal recruitment is to know members in sororities. Every single house does COB. You knowing about it has nothing to do with their 'desirability.' Join for sisterhood and you will have a life-changing experience. Join for your idea of status and you will spend a lot of money for nothing.
