How common is being a 5th year

by:

Curious about this. I’m from a small school and we don’t have many so I am interested in hearing if this is a common thing

It's super common! I think bama only has a 50% 4 year graduate rate, obviously also taking drop outs into account. Everyone is on their own path though so it doesn't really matter

Just because something is common doesn’t make it a good idea lol

Some people can't help it though? You don't know everyones situations so why judge?

People at other schools clearly can help it. It is not normal for a graduation rate to be so low even at a public school

Spreading your undergrad across 5 years allows you to take on more projects both your on campus and outside, as well as dial in your GPA to apply to grad school.

Granted not everyone can do that, but if you can you should. Less stress. Higher GPA and more project or lab experience.

Well if you change your major a couple of times it can’t be helped

Everyone has their own timeline. Life happens too and sometimes you need a mental break from school. Being a 5th year doesn’t make you any less special as someone who is able to graduate on time.

I'm a sophomore and planning to do 5 years. Hard major, extremely competitive desired graduate program. Almost full ride, it's no brainer. I'd much rather take a 5th year then do summer classes.

You get older, but the freshman girls stay the same age.
