what’s the difference between old row and new row

i keep seeing rankings and ppl saying which sororities are new row/old row. coming from a west coaster what does that mean LOL is it a whole tier difference? or does it just mean the actual location of the house? or how long they’ve been on campus?

OR sorority historically pulled most of its girls from a few Alabama towns/high schools. NR sorority pulled from the rest of the world. As you can imagine, over time the OR girls start to look like the banjo player from Deliverance as their family tree continues along such a straight line.

Basically OR is a function of the machine which is a big political thing in alabama.
