someone explain greek life at alabama to me pls
by: ?first off, i dont go to bama. im from california and go to school on the west coast but ive always been weirdly confused and fascinated by greek life in sec schools. i know its big there and a lot of it is tradition but some parts of it just seem kinda odd to me. for one, are your rankings for sororities based off looks? i know for every other school in the US it is (you can try to counter that it’s based off personality match and whatever but lets be real here) but it seems like at least at alabama its based off more things like sisterhood and involvement on campus and things like that which is interesting. also, do you guys really cut by gpa and not having letters of rec? thats soo weird to me because at least at my school im pretty sure most people have a perfect 4.0 UW or above 4.0 W from high school and i go to a top 20 school so like nobody really gets cut by gpa there. also no shade at all but like bama isnt really known for being the most selective school in terms of acceptance so like how hard would it be for people to keep their gpa in high school up to begin with if theyre only taking the easiest classes in high school? and the whole letter of rec thing is also foreign to me lol. apparently if you dont have a letter of rec for a house at bama then you’re pretty much guaranteed to be dropped from them? but like if everyone has a letter of rec for every house then doesnt that just put everyone on the same playing field as before if nobody had any letters of rec since nobody is standing out at all? lol. and lastly, ive always wondered this and i really hope this doesnt come off as rude but like do girls rushing at bama really just not care about the lack of diversity and inclusion in the houses? not trying to offend anyone at all but like theres been a history of exclusion and alleged racism scandals that have occurred not too long in the past and have made the news which you can easily search up on google...how do you guys preach sisterhood when this is so blatantly obvious?...no shade is meant by any of this btw ive just had these burning questions for a while and its crazy for me to see how serious people at bama take the rush process tbh

That was rlly long but to answer all your questions. Yes and no, Alabama is one of the biggest Greek life schools in probably the nation. So any girls here would be blessed and grateful to even end up in A house because every year there’s girls who slips up and gets dropped completely from all houses. It varies on houses to be honest with you, they’re are houses that will drop you just Bc you don’t have a rec for them or simply because of your GPA. (Again all chapters are different so it varies from each.) There’s not a ton and thousands of minority girls that are sororities girls here like you would see if you rush like an Ivy League where some chapters have a ton of minorities. But there are some minorities that rush every year and some that are in each chapters. And the ranks, ranks are pretty much bull on here or anywhere else Bc on campus when you walk down sorority row, your not gonna go and think “oh this sorority is a bottom house” or “oh she’s in a top house”. But rankings (imo) are socially based of reputation, involvement, sisterhood, etc. Not Bc of their looks, a bottom house could have one of the Hottest girls ever in that chapter but could be one of the worst people you could ever meet. And acceptance rates, Alabama isn’t rlly the hardest school to get into Bc if you look at last year acceptance rate it was around the 50’s. If you have atleast over a 3.0 gpa then you’ll pretty much get in. Reason being got the previous years people think they can get in with like a 1.8 gpa but practically if you have over a 3.0 your pretty much solid. Lastly rec letters, here at bama they are very important, chapters do cut pnms just Bc they don’t have one but if each PNM have the same rec letters then the chapters would cut based on who they think would fit their sororities. At the end of the day the chapters knows who girls will fit in there and who won’t. Alabama does lack diversity in some places but if your a person who was to go to a EXTREMLY diversite school then Alabama isn’t the one. (Sorry bud) but diversity doesn’t rlly bother anyone here if u rlly don’t care about it.

You seem to be getting everything you know from this pathetic site. For someone at a "top 20" school you seem pretty dense.
1) Ranks are total BS and not a real thing. You should know better than to rank other women, especially for such an enlightened Cali girl.
2) Why are you assuming that UA students are "only taking the easiest classes in high school"? The same could be said for a lot of places. UA is about 50% out of state, offers excellent scholarships for high performers, and the average HS GPA of our sorority new member classes is 3.89. Are there students here who get in with far lower of a GPA? Yes. Are they in sororities? No.
3) Recs are far less important than connections. Recs don't help as much as not having one will hurt because most will get them. If you want my sorority you will make the effort.
4) Diversity is huge a function of who rushes the NPC sororities. Can't offer bids to girls who don't go through rush. There is also a huge and strong tradition of Divine 9 here, so that is another option for some. Membership is getting more diverse every year, but it is not helped by ignorant stereotyping from people like you whose comments help to further put off WOC from actually rushing.

Does your “top 20” school not teach punctuation?
Your posts/rants are difficult to read.
The questions you asked have been answered quite well. Yes, grades are important but not every girl in every house is going to have a 4.0. There are lots of textbook pretty girls, but not all houses are so superficial to only take “hot” girls. Recs are required by Nationals or chapter advisors. The active members have nothing to do with this. Your assumptions about Greek life are way off.
Greek life at Alabama beats any other campus around the country. RTR
