pnm video for rush

by:

how are houses even cutting girls from this pre recorded video? can you really tell anything about a person enough to know whether they’d fit in ur chapter or not just from a less than 60 second intro video? i feel like this will screw with a lot of people’s rush experiences because there’s no possible way to get a full grasp on someone’s personality from a minute long video

Honestly most houses aren’t gonna drop as many girls after open house as they did years past. Open house drops will be based on grades/gpa, involvement, rec letters, social media, and if you have a reputation. It’s too late to do anything about your grades or involvement in sports/clubs/volunteer work, but def get all your recs (try for 1 for every house), keep your social media clean and delete any bad photos, and make sure you have a good reputation going into rush. Don’t start fights w other pnms on groupme and stuff. We can sometimes hear about that stuff.

The truth is you need to be able to make an honest assessment of how connected you are and then where you stand academically and with your leadership. Most pnms are going to be somewhere in the middle. Then you need to manage your expectations going into rush.
The best thing someone told me is that even though there are 17 chapters- you only will be invited to rush at best half of them, and you don’t know which ones until philanthropy day.
The average pnm will get 6 to 8 invites on philanthropy. These are the ones to now get to know and to be enthusiastic for.
The problem with being on GR is it tends to put chapters into three tiers, with everyone focusing too much on the top. Those chapters are strong recruiting chapters and they have to release pnms very early on, and focus on the ones they know well or have certain attributes they need.
Focus on the middle and lower tiers before rush, to find a few that you think might be interesting to you also. Keep an open mind. All the chapters at Alabama are good and the way rush is designed is to give all of them a good chapter of new members- so they continue to thrive.
Last piece of advice is that people only care about your “letters” for 5 minutes after bid day… after that it’s all the effort that you make to get involved in your chapter and make friends and build your relationships.
Keep an open mind and realize that getting a bid to any one of these chapters is a huge accomplishment

I’m real sorry to tell you this but first round is usually girls getting through that houses have already picked out and/or grade cuts. We just are finally realizing how pointless the first round of rush is and saying a cute little intro video is equal to a supposedly equal opportunity to meet girls in the houses and have them “get to know you”.
So no the video isn’t what screws you but it’s DDD gonna be the reason so many mobile mamas blame their sweet pea not getting the invites back that they wanted.

Houses already know who they’re cutting first round long before rush starts. My house already has you on our cut list of:
1. You’re below a 3.2 GPA
2. Bad reputation (sleeping around, mean girl)
3. Questionable social media (alcohol, smoking, sl_tty)

Philanthropy is the first round where we’re really trying to get to know you.

how do they find out reputation

I’m from out of state but I know like 6 girls coming through rush from high school and mutual friends. It’s pretty easy if you’re from the same school or a nearby school to ask around about a pnm.

This is why recruitment for OOR girls is brutal. Nobody, or very few, Actives know them so they are at a disadvantage of having any connections within the house to avoid cuts during first round. It has very little to do with who you are as a person and more to do with how many Actives already know you. A girl from Connecticut (where fewer Actives are from) will have a much tougher time during recruitment than a girl from a big high school from AL or GA. Houses are going to prefer girls they know over ones they only have resumes for and a video.

OOR girls will experience deep cuts in the first round unless they have GPAs of 4.0 or higher distinguishing themselves from the hundreds of girls nobody in the house knows. After first round, it IS about getting to know the PNM during the parties.

Also, letters of recommendation from people that don't know you personally are of little value. Almost all the houses have a National rec form that requires the writer to disclose if they know you personally and for how long. As you would imagine, houses don't put much value in recs written by people who have never met you.

For OOR, be prepared for deep cuts first round but please know its not personal. After that, you have the same chance at making an impression as anyone.

many girls trying to rush this year don’t have the best grades. if houses are seriously all cutting girls immediately that don’t have 3.2+, might be hard to meet quota. what about the houses that take a few grade risks even if they’re under the “recommended gpa” that house lists on greek chic. those girls that may sometimes get into a house as grade risk have no chance

By: ^^^
by: Uh

Quota is determined after pref, by the number of girls left in recruitment. It’s not set beforehand. Chapter cuts determine quota, quota doesn’t determine chapter cuts

I'm not sure why grades of incoming freshman would be any lower than previous years to be honest. There will be over 2,200 girls going through recruitment and a substantial number of those PNMs will have GPAs over 3.5, if not higher.

Houses will cut for grades during the first round because they can. The numbers are in the houses' favor. And, some girls do take a few grade risks past first round BUT those PNM's are usually very well connected to Actives within the house through high school connections, siblings, etc. We aren't bluffing about first round cuts based on grades.

Y’all pnms are finally starting to realize that you have no power in the selection process until pref. We’ve been trying to tell you this ALL SUMMER.

If I have a 3.196 will I make the 3.2 cutoff? Do you round up?

By: Bama
by: act

you honestly need a 3.0+ not a 3.2+.....only grades houses like alpha gam, alpha chi, and chi o will cut you if you're under a 3.2, most other houses don't care

i would agree with this the houses are 3.0 for the most part unless it’s a few old row houses that consistently have higher grades in grade reports

Hey ho woah. That may be somewhat true, but when it comes down to it, if I’ve got Molly Mobile and Bridget Bham and they both were captains of the volleyball team and both organized the blood drives for their schools and both have glowing reputations, but ones got a 3.0 and one has a 3.2, you best believe we pick the one with the higher gpa. Gotta whittle those lists of hundreds down somehow!!

You can go on the Panhellenic website and it gives detailed instructions for making the pnm intro video. Good idea to start thinking about what you want to say and have an idea now- check and watch old pnm intro videos too. We watch these and they matter. Good to submit them earlier and not wait until last minute

I feel horrible for pnms. This set up is total bs and isn’t what is best for the members. It’s honestly what is best for old row houses who have their bid lists picked out already and don’t wanna get to meet everyone for equal chance of all girls.

How else would we do it? We have a week to evaluate 2,500 girls and identify the 130-140 girls that would fit best in our house. If we spend time getting to meaningful know every single girl personally, recruitment would take us weeks and we are all FT students too and already don't get much sleep for 2 weeks preparing and putting on recruitment. The early cuts are painful because they are made on some very impersonal factors. That is unavoidable with how big recruitment is at AL. And, despite our efforts to get it right for our house and the PNMs, we will still encounter PNMs that have already decided they want a different house and be rude to the houses she doesn't want based off of GR, gossip, and maybe the first round video...which is also superficial and impersonal. The kicker is when PNMs cry on bid day because they think they are better than the house they received a bid from. What a joke. Anyone who gets a bid from an AL sorority should be flattered regardless of house. I am in a top ranked house and we even get a couple of girls that are stupid dramatic because we weren't their first choice...as if we should be thankful they accepted our bid. Grow up.

If you know of a better way of doing it, please inform the thousands of Actives at AL how it should be done.

I was on recruitment team for my house - I read over 200 rec letters on my own and even more resumes. I personally made an effort because rush is brutally unfair to girls w no prior connections. Y’all are just proving my point: you have no interest in getting to know other girls because you already know who you want. A LOT of the houses don’t even watch the videos. These girls are getting dropped over bs reasons: is she pretty enough? Does she have a legacy connection? Where is she from? Snap judgements without even meeting her. Recruitment needs to go back to in person 2019 - at least give these pnms a shot to talk to a house in person to change their mind about the decision they already had from looking at her social media. Your “life sucks” attitude is completely unrealistic and elitist of you. Stop living in a fantasy world where there isn’t a perfectly realistic alternative that was used for years and worked fine.

This is absolutely NOT an old row thing. There have always been lists of first round cuts, potential cuts, top pnm's and potential top pnm's decided before first round, the "Ice Water Teas," in every single chapter, long before there were rush videos. There must some pre-sorting done ahead of time and that's never all been left to the first night, at any chapter.
