Please do not act like any pledge picked in this mess, is the first. 10 years ago Gamma Phi Beta was the FIRST and ONLY sorority on campus to pledge an AA woman. They have paid a VERY heavy price for it. So rather than congratulate a house for doing it now... How about we all gather around Gamma Phi Beta and say we were wrong for treating you that way. They were and always will be the ones that thought ahead and fought against the system. Kudos.

How has The Gammas paid a very high price for it. They were at the bottom a long time before pledging an AA woman. Who they pledged had nothing to do with their ratings. It didn't help or hurt them.

This is an inaccurate statement.

That is true. They were bottom dwellers when they first came to this campus and never rose above it.

Obviously you were all on campus when they first arrived a couple decades ago. It is honestly impressive you can vouch for their standings from 20 something years prior to the current situation facing all Panhellenic chapters at UA. The fact of the matter is that regardless of what you think you know- they still accepted an AA woman and paid the price for it socially. Do I think it affected their sisterhood? Probably not. However it certainly contributed to a reputation that they have been trying to overcome for some time now. Regardless of reputation though- they still deserve respect.

It's not an inaccurate statement. A deal was made - GPB got swaps with fraternities would never have deigned to talk to them. Seems a fair trade.

My aunt was here at the time and we have talked about it extensively. Gamma Phi was a middle tier house -- not great, not terrible. Then there wasn't a lot of emphasis on what "tier" a house was in because the internet wasn't as pervasive as it is now. Gamma Phis have always been more open to diversity than many other houses, so when they wanted to take their second African American girl, they did. The machine promised not to punish them because it would take pressure off the other houses to integrate. That promise lasted only one year and after that the machine made sure that Gamma Phis were completely ostracized.

That's it. They obviously didn't get great swaps the last ten years. What are you thinking? For the first year they got about the same swaps. After that --- zilch..

Gamma Phi was never a great house, but they weren't bottom while Sigma Kappa was active and SDT was still on the row and doing formal rush.

Why would they ever try to pledge another. Please dont act like you dont know why they didnt. And nowwwww because all the houses have to "re-group" everyone wants to throw a parade for the "first" house that pledges one. LOL. At least give credit where credit is due!

You will be known as the ones that made change. The others are acting like they are taking in a foster child and they should be praised.

The gamma phis now had absolutely nothing to do with the fact that an AA woman was taken into pledgeship. They are no better than the rest of us in this, and need to stop looking for credit for something they had no part in.
