controversy

by:

This will probably shock everyone, but I'm going to say good for Gamma Phi for having the nerve to at least try. They should be proud of themselves and they should wear their status as a badge of honor. I knows it's way more popular to rip into them and call them bottom tier, but they're the only ones so far who have demonstrated any backbone at all. Yeah, I realize there will be a thousand first circle girls and old row guys on here to crucify them because of this comment, but they need to know that at least some of us think they did the right thing and are proud of their stance.

The Gamma Phi's of 2003-2006 were a brave and wonderful group of girls for extending a bid to that African American woman, but the Gamma Phi's of today had nothing to do with it. They are in the same boat as the rest of us.

True fact. Gamma Phi is desperate to get their status back. No way would they do that again

I agree that the Gamma Phi's who broke the color barrier were brave and wonderful. But because of them, the Gamma Phis of today are NOT in the same boat with the rest of us. They are on the right side of history because of those girls. If you know how recruitment works, you'll realize that the African American women who recently went through recruitment likely dropped Gamma Phi early because they had so many higher ranked options. Then they were dropped by everyone else.

And as to the reply above. I don't know all the Gamma Phis, but I do know a few and they don't care at all about status. They are happy to be in a house and love their sisters. Really, that was quite a mean comment to say the the house as a whole is desperate. I'd say it's just the opposite.

That is some serious speculation. Seeing as you have no access to who they ranked or were called back to, you can't say that at all. Gamma Phi is not in the clear. They are getting just as much heat as the rest of the houses and are actually more likely not to call someone back because their reputation is so poor and they're trying to fix that. The truth of the matter is that saying Gamma Phi is better bc of something from ten years ago that has nothing to do with them now is incredibly ignorant and shows you know so little about greek politics.

wanted the girl as well but didn't want any more social pariah comments or actions. With some of the extremely vocal ignorant Greeks here, i don't blame them.

True fact. Gamma Phi has an amazing sisterhood. Whether you try to keep them low on your "tiers" or call them names, they are the chapter that pledged the AA girl. The are not desperate. They are living their lives and loving their sisterhood and Bama experience.

At least they did! The Machine can do what it wants, at least Gamma Phi will have something to claim historically at this school. They might not be doing so great now but at least they have evidence that they once had a backbone. Who else does? What do the others have to say? Some old witch told me to pledge Honey Boo Boo because she was white? At least they tried, and got nothing, worse than DG. Not in either, just my opinion.

GPhi took her because the Machine offered to improve their social standing if they did. Which was a lie, by the way.

GPhi did it to try to improve their status. Not the altruistic gesture you think it was.

That's a rumor and completely untrue. People just keep spreading it like it's fact and it isn't. I know because I was there. GPhi took a girl they wanted on her own merits. No one made them do anything. They suffered enormously for doing it because af beachy asshats like you. But at least their conscience is clear here. By the way, unlike all of your organizations, GPhi has NEVER had a discrimination clause in their national rules.

If you've read about it you'll find that they did it because they were convinced it was the right thing to do and they were encouraged by some in the machine to integrate to satisfy some critics. Remember, Gamma Phi has always taken more out of state girls who were open to more diversity and so they didn't have the same prejudices that some of the other houses had. Unfortunately, the machine shortly afterward bent over backward to punish them for their stand. So in a sense you're right -- it wasn't altruistic because the girl they pledged was amazing and they wanted her. But you're wrong that they did it to improve their status. At the time they were a mid tier house and before this site people didn't obsess about tiers. They did it with some assurance from some in the machine that it wouldn't hurt their swaps. Which of course it did big time.

I wasn't here at the time, but I did just spend a few minutes with google trying to find out about the history of this incident and that's what I found out.

Of course the machine and its minions are going to present this differently.

I'm not saying they didn't want the AA girl. I'm sure they did, and she was a great PNM. But a deal was made.

is ALWAYS more open on pretty much every campus! They get it, and they take their principles a LOT more seriously than other groups. And they don't pick and choose who gets the benefits. I love those girls, regardless or where they come from!

So many GPhis on here saying they're amazing... Y'all aren't the same people (for whatever reasons they did it) from 2003. You're exactly the same as all the other houses. Stop acting like you're so great. You didn't take the girls, end of story.

Gamma Phis are not the same because their organization historically did the right thing and has paid a price for it. This year, they couldn't pledge the girls because they didn't even have a chance at them. Figure out the facts before you pontificate. And by the way, just because someone tells the truth on here, it doesn't meant they're a Gamma Phi. I am commenting because I find it so ironic that the one house that has actually walked the walk has been the one thrown under the bus for it.

Absolute truth! Every other comment on this board is about how bad Gamma Phi is even though some will admit that "they got an outstanding new class" or something like that. I'm not a Gamma Phi but I think you have to admit that they are much better than they get credit for. The oos girls that they get are truly outstanding and as a whole, they don't seem to care about "status" and "tiers" as much as the houses that fight over Alabama girls. I think it's time they had their recognition.

A GPHI than in the house i'm in right now. I didn't know this is the kind of mentality my "sisters" would have. I know bird of a feather flock, and i'm a hummingbird amongst crows.

You may not know the answer to this, but I'm so disgusted right now I want out of my house. If I drop before initiation, but still want to be greek, is it possible to still be a Gamma?

As long as you withdraw before initiation you are eligible for recruitment next fall. I don't know if Gamma Phi would want you, but you could try.

Congratulations to Gamma Phi for their strong stance in the past. Good luck to them as we move forward for them to be able to continue!
