Have you guys read today's article in the CW about segregation in the greek system? What did you think?

I can't speak for all chapters, but everybody I talked to has the same thing to say..."we wanted her, our alumnae made sure it didn't happen". I don't doubt any of the comments in that article, and I can verify some of them 100%.

I have a friend who is in a sorority here and she said the exact same thing, Alumni wouldn't allow it. It blows my mind that they play such a big role in what these girls do and for some of them, even change their opinion on things. A lot of these girls in grew up with everyone being seen as equal, but Alabama is brainwashing them to believing otherwise. I'm so proud of the girls who said something. That's definitely the first step.

Alumni were here before you... Therefore they made your house the way it is today and probably sink significant funds into your house. I was taught as a pledge to give alumni more respect than anyone in the house. But your probably right. Who needs money and who cares about who built 100s of years of tradition? This guy

I didn't realize that alum own the chapters (sarcasm).

By: didn't

It's not as sarcastic as you think. All it takes is a threat to pull alumni funding, and the chapters go weak in the knees.

Why join a group that hates you? i mean really. Even if she got in, the fraternities and other sorostitutes would have given her hell (as well as her sisters). Everyone knows white sororities/fraternities are made for rich white kids to mingle and screw each other then pick which one has the better standing to marry. So who is she gonna get to give her a MRS degree in such backwards white male company?

systems actually have some degree of diversity these days. Bama is one of the few schools left that has so many stark white chapters. Every national fraternity and sorority has members of every color these days.

Not surprised. And don't really care. Greek Life has forever been a means to keep groups separate. Keep privileged white kids together and keep p any one who is different out.. But i bet you didn't know some of those white as snow girls aren't so white on the inside. Passe a blanc isn't a thing of the past.

I wonder if this will ever change

it sucks that the sororities that actually wanted to recruit the girls are now being posted all over websites as discriminatory.

While everyone blows this out of proportion, I would just like to point out the fact that today should have stood for something MUCH bigger than this controversy that the CW decided to blow out of proportion. The non-greek members of The Crimson White were so busy with a story that they know nothing about and have no business writing about that they forgot to even MENTION that it is the twelve year anniversary of 9/11. While it is a tragedy that these amazing African American girls did not have a successful rush, I would say that this article could have waited until tomorrow and the CW should have given an even bigger tragedy respect.

Nobody will pledge a black woman until an "older" house does it.

UA is hardly a bastion of intelligence, so you can't expect the CW to be any better.

If AGD or DDD had pledged a black woman, it would have opened the doors for the "lower tier" groups to be OK with pledging black women.
In reality, the wouldn't have done it...yet. One person in one chapter....but if another top group takes one...even next year...everyone would relax and the gates would open...for the few who care.

Lower tiers will have to get the ball rolling though. The older and the more prestigious houses have more options

NO...it's social suicide for a lower house tier to do it. AGD, KD, DDD, XO, AXO, KKG, PM...they have to go first.

Don't see houses that have such an alumni pull (older houses) doing this.

row house probably wants to take the risk. It decimated Gamma Phi, and in 10 years they've seen new houses come on campus and pass them because of the effect it had on their house.

So glad I don't go to school here!

I go to another SEC school and our sorority has minority members, self-supporting active chapter, alumnae who don't meddle. Hope the actives in Tuscaloosa stick with it and force change through their national chapters. Your greek sisters are pulling for you. You can do it...it is 2013. Good luck!
