It is not a club or a society and there is no selection process. There were the first 6 fraternities here that all had their houses on the west side of the campus. When fraternities started building on the east side in the 50's and 60's, people started referring to the "new row" fraternities and the "old row" fraternities. Then Budweiser came along and began sponsoring the "old row" houses by giving them free beer and a party in the spring to promote their brand, along with t-shirts and other promo material. Then, what would be the point of doing all this without making sure that a bunch of sorority women would be there too? So the older sororities were asked to join the group; however, some refused because of their national policies on alcohol and the sponsorship, so then other sororities, who were not as old, were asked to make up the difference. So, the sororities were only 'old row' by association with Budweiser and not because they are necessarily the oldest - ADPi, Zeta, and DZ are older but people think of them as 'new row' only because of this. So: SAE, DKE, KA, SN, PDT, PhiGam are the actual, original "old row." Budweiser sponsorship is long gone and you can't change your founding date, but people LOVE to find ways to make others think they are special, so they cling to 'old row.'

Only the part about frats being old row and new row is right. The Budweiser story is a myth made up by houses that aren't and never were OR.

The sororities thought of as OR were the ones that swapped and socialized with the OR frats decades before any Bud party. The strongest frats socialized with the strongest sororities. No sororitys were ever asked to join old row by any mythical Budweiser sponsorship that was turned down. No one is asked to join OR.

The houses thought of as OR were and are still thought of as the strongest on campus. No one thinks that much about it, except some NR people who obsess about it.\n\n\n\n\n
