lower tier sororities
by: questionI have seen comments that Theta, Gamma Phi, and other lower tier houses got great pledge classes. Does this mean that soon there will be no lower tier if this continues? With all the girls being released because they had no house to go back to, are our lower houses moving into the middle?

There will always be a bottom/middle/upper tier, but what most people coming into Alabama don't understand is the even the bottom tier chapters here are better and have better quality girls than upper tier chapters almost everywhere else in the country. When compared to other chapters at other schools, every sorority on row would be considered upper tier. There is honestly no bad sorority on row!

Yes, Theta, GPhi, DG, and APhi took good pledge classes this year. Like the previous poster noted, many of the girls in the "lower tiers" would probably be in "top tier" houses at other schools. Also, DG, GPhi, and APhi are the newest chapters at Bama. Over a period of time, there can be some flux in Greek systems (what was top at my mom's school is no really hurting-not Bama). Also, the big increase in out of state girls to Bama may eventually take away some of the mystique of some of the "top houses," as these girls are less concerned about the in-state reputations of the "top tier" houses, and are (possibly) more objective in their choices.
The bottom line is it looks like everyone took good pledge classes. Let's just enjoy that, and the fact that Bama has an incredible Greek system.

Tier is right on the money... Everyone else is butt hurt. No one will change tradition... Enjoy your house but people have to face reality. Some girls have dream rushes where they have all top tier houses to choose from others end up with just one but hey one is all it takes. Have a great year

The girls from my hometown that I admire the most are the ones that didn't just make college 4 more years of highschool.
Some girls do want to go to their state school and join the house that "everybody wants to be in." Then they enjoy 4 more years hanging around the same people and go back to their hometowns to continue. That was my mother's life.
For me, I wanted something more. Even though I was a legacy (3time legacy actually) at a top house, I cut them the first day and spent my time trying to decide on houses that weren't as popular. I ended up in a houses that might be lower middle or even at the top of the lower tier. I had a perfect recruitment, in that I got every house I chose and wasn't ever eliminated from a house I liked.
It's been a great experiment. I have gotten to know girls from all over the US and have made many friends I know are forever friends. When I get out of school, I'm not getting married and moving back to the B'ham area. I'm going to work for the State Dept. and hope to be posted in another country.
I am ready for the whole tiers thing to go away. If girls don't have a lot of family support, self-confidence, and sense of adventure, they end up in the same top-tier house their mother and grandmother did because that's easy and expected. I'm so glad that's not me.
