If I don’t have any connections and I’m not super pretty should I even get my hopes up about “Old Row” houses? I have great grades and numerous leadership positions, plus volunteering, but I’m pretty average everywhere else. I can get recommendations.

Rush is not all about connections. The girls want to see that you can hold conversations, you're engaging and interested in greek life. Leadership positions are HUGE and every sorority strives to rush girls who are very involved. Looks seriously mean nothing. As long as you look well put together and have a good head on your shoulders you will find an amazing house. Make sure that you talk about all the activities you were involved in throughout the whole week. I hate to say it but you have to brag on yourself a little bit. Rush is supposed to be fun, so go through the week with a positive attitude, as hard as it may be.

From personal experience and observations, only connections can keep you from getting cut from old row + pi phi, zeta, and maybe adpi if you aren’t good looking or especially if you are overweight. All the girls you see in those houses who are average looking/chubby either grew up in Alabama or are from another major area (private school atl, Memphis, etc)
You will almost definitely get a bid if you have the bare minimum of good grades and the ability to hold a convo, which it sounds like you do. But it’s good to be realistic about what bid that may be.

Completely agree. And then the houses who prioritize quality women over physical appearances are largely the ones being made fun of here.

Tbh there are enough high quality, academic yet fit and cute pnms that the top houses don’t have to compromise much At all

This is true. Where the top houses compromise a little is extending bids to "connected" pnms that when feel obligated for whatever reason and chapter legacies if a sister or the mom-alum is relevant

I want to clarify and say that old row houses are not deliberately taking girls just because they are pretty— @Hh is right that there are a ton of smart, involved, and connected girls that just happen to also be good looking. The fact that old row also takes the smart and connected but less attractive girls means that the looks are less important. Key is still connections though.

DO NOT BE TOO HUMBLE. Rush is not the time to be modest about your accomplishments! Don't brag obviously, but talk with passion about what you're involved in and what it means to you (you know the difference between doing that vs bragging). You want to highlight the best parts of yourself

Also- Old Row houses are the same as any other house. At the end of the day, all that matters is where you feel most comfortable. The 'popularity' of sorority means absolutely nothing. That is not what greek life is about in all honesty!!
