recruitment advice

by:

Recruitment is a week of mutual selection, but as a PNM, you will be doing less of the selecting. Many of you will be "released" (cut) by sororities you love and that you think love you.

At that point you have 2 options. First, you can drop out of recruitment and hope that next year you will be magically invited into the sorority of your dreams. That isn't going to happen. There's only a 1 in 1,000 chance that a house that released you as a freshman would ever want to keep you as a sophomore. Nothing your mom or the alumna president from your hometown can do will change things.

Second, you can look at the houses you do have invites to and realize that those are the houses that want YOU! You can push the reset button and look carefully at those houses and make your choice from among the ones that want you. Tier doesn't matter. Every nat'l sorority is high some places and low other places

The truth is that all houses have beauties, smart girls, party girls, heavy girls, pageant girls, engineering girls, dancers, blondes, tall girls, athletes, sweet girls, mean girls, and perfect girls. In every house, IF YOUR HEART IS WILLING, you will find your best friends and future bridesmaids.

Of course, you may find friends like that in the dorm or apartment, but that's more rare. And if you do drop out, you'll miss greek life in Alabama which is spectacular! Each house is actually respected and loved by the other houses. (The hatred you see here is largely manufactured by greekrank.)

This is the most important thing you'll ever read. Few people have perfect rush but everyone going into it seems to think they will.

THANK YOU so so much for this! I am a PNM and am nervous about being cut from my favorite house during recruitment but this post has totally calmed my nerves and assured me that even if I am cut from my favorite house that there is light at the end of the tunnel. Thank you thank you thank you

I'd say that most of you will be cut from your favorite houses. It's just the way it goes. Only a handful of girls each year has a perfect rush. But it doesn't matter. Every house here is amazing. The lowest ranking ones are still miles above being a GDI. And miles above being greek at any other school. So fall in love with any house that's fallen in love with you. You WILL be happy.

This advice is on the mark. Most PNMs who don't get bids end up that way because they drop out, not because they get dropped by every house. They don't like their return invites after a round, and that's it for them. Not sugar coating anything. It HURTS when favorites drop you, but girls who pick themselves up and find new favorites are usually so glad they stayed with the process. They see that they really did end up in the best place for them. Those who drop are often sorry they did. Rush ends and it's everyday life. They see sororities they could have gone back to around campus, meet members in class or the dorms, and realize they chose to miss out on a chance for a great sisterhood. Good luck to all of the PNMs!
