true???

I heard that the machine is going to require that every house have at least 1 or 2 representatives of another race because Bama is getting such a bad reputation. I heard that otherwise the whole greek system might be shut down for constitutional reasons.

Forcing the matter is the absolute wrong way to do it. If anything it'll just piss people off even more on both sides.

I hope that this doesn't happen because the backlash would be huge

get shut down for Constitutional reasons, they have a right to pick whatever members they want. In fact, shutting them down for not taking members they don't want would be blatantly Unconstitutional. I don't agree with not taking members exclusively based on race, but shutting Greek organization down for it would be an actual Constitutional violation.

...this a little humorous. LOL. What a statement. Honey, you can change yourself, but it is hard to change much of anything else. And, you are giving the machine too much credit. They can't influence much more than SGA elections and Homecoming Court. If you want to go greek, then go greek. Otherwise, let it be.

IDK, that's just what I heard too. I heard that the constitution says you can't discriminate against someone just because of race. Of course you can discriminate for finances, recs, looks, etc., just not race. That's just what I heard.

Constitution is for the federal government and state governments for parts that have been incorporated. It doesn't apply to private citizens or groups, just government interactions with private citizens and groups. For instance someone cannot protest on your private property, and if you kick them off you haven't violated their free speech, because free speech only goes so far as to stop the government from interfering. A group has a right to free assembly, meaning they can assemble with who they wish. The government shutting them down for exercising a Constitutional right is a blatant violation. A private university might have the ability to refuse to recognize Greek organizations, though as schools like Harvard and Princeton show, they cannot stop them from existing. Bama however is a public campus and can't refuse to recognize them, and cannot pull recognition just because they think the group is discriminatory (most student groups are in one way or another). Don't misunderstand this as a promotion of discrimination, I don't go to Bama, and I'm completely open to the membership of anyone who fits the mold of the kind of guy we're looking for regardless of race. However, as far as the Constitution goes, you're entirely incorrect, and the moment we're told we have to open our membership to all comers we may as well cease to exist.

I just heard this too. I don't think that they'll take it to the supreme court or anything like that but I did hear the the university is getting involved to make sure that race isn't a factor. IDK how in the world they'd be present at membership selection and know why everybody voted the way they did,but whatever.

They can't make sororities take African-Americans. They could probably only make sure they race wasn't the sole deciding factor, The university would be overstepping its powers if this was the case

Without taking some non-white girls, how can it be shown that race wasn't the only consideration?
